Robert Hooke in 1665 observed slices of cork under a microscope and noticed small compartments or boxes that resembled the cells of a honeycomb. He coined the term "cell" to describe these boxes. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of all living organisms. Cells come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and numbers depending on the organism. Single-celled organisms like amoebas perform all life functions within a single cell, while multicellular organisms have cells that specialize and combine to form tissues and organs that perform specific functions.
