Component of Food Function in the Body
Carbohydrate

Increase in proportion of muscle mass to fat would also increase
overall metabolic rate.
Fat also helps to insulate the body and protect some organs. Stored energy is the safest answer but
insulation will also get you a mark. Proteins also make enzymes and some hormones.

Malnutrition can lead to being overweight as well as being underweight. Not having enough of the
right vitamins and minerals can lead to getting a deficiency disease . Remember, you don’t need to
know the names of any deficiency diseases.
‘Suggest’ questions are there to test your
understanding in a broader way, but the plus
side is that there are usually many possible
answers.

The rate/speed of all chemical reactions in the body. [1] !! 1 (a) (ii) Some people have low metabolic rates. ! Suggest one thing a person can do to increase their metabolic rate. Fat also helps to insulate the body and protect some organs. Stored energy is the safest answer but insulation will also get you a mark. Proteins also make enzymes and some hormones.

Not having enough of the right vitamins and minerals can lead to getting a deficiency disease . Remember, you don’t need to know the names of any deficiency diseases. ‘Suggest’ questions are there to test your understanding in a broader way, but the plus side is that there are usually many possible answers.
