Room 204: Reflections on Student Teaching by Nahid Husain
7th Grade Gifted Language Arts
1. Welcome to Open House!! Mrs. Debbie Harper Accelerated/PROBE Language Arts 2009-2010
2. Accelerated/PROBE This is considered to be an advanced language arts class. Students are expected to reach as high as possible. Students are expected to maintain a 74% or higher in the class We move at an advanced pace, as well as look for ways to think “outside the box” and utilize our higher order thinking skills. My job is to enrich and cover more deeply the standard language arts curriculum!
3. Accelerated/PROBE cont… Enrichment doesn’t necessarily mean more work, but it will mean deeper insights and higher order thinking! Students must learn to go above and beyond what they believe to be their academic limits!
4. Word of the Day (WOD) Everyday we have a word of the day. This is SAT vocabulary. After 10 words, they have a quiz!
5. Veritable (pos?) Josh thought the all-girl’s high school down the block was a veritable gold mine for dates. Adjective- being without question, often used figuratively.
6. Daily Grammar Practice (DGP) This is nightly homework. Consists of 1 sentence that is used for the week. Monday- parts of speech Tuesday- sentence parts and phrases Wednesday- clauses and sentence type Thursday- Capitalization and Punctuation Friday- Diagramming
7. Novel Responses One due a month. List of novels should be in their binders. Literary analysis instead of a straight book report. Recommended book for help: How to read Literature like a Professor. Must complete reading log with every assigned novel response. First one is due in two days!!
8. Research Part of the expectation for PROBE is a focus on research. We will do several in-depth research projects this year. Might be helpful to have a flash-drive in case work needs to be completed at home. Research is extremely important both in high school and college!
9. Currently in class… We are focusing on the short story literary genre. Students are surrently in jigsaw groups reading O. Henry stories. Students will become “experts” on one story and then come together in a jigsaw format to share and teach the stories to each other. The purpose is to become aware of more than just the stories in the school textbook and to become appreciative of the wealth of literature available from this author.
