This document proposes a training manual for the Nigerian Prisons Service with a focus on enhancing inmate rehabilitation through improved training of officers and welfare workers. It argues that a psychologically prepared officer is needed to effectively protect life and property. The manual provides basic explanations of common psychological disorders, personality disorders, and childhood disorders to aid rehabilitation efforts. It also discusses the importance of risk assessment and outlines the roles of correctional psychologists in classification, training, consultation, evaluation, and therapy. Screening and evaluation tools are identified to assess inmate needs and behaviors. Procedures for managing mental health crises and emergencies in prisons are explained.
