This document describes British patent GB780067A from 1957 regarding improvements to gas turbine plants. It involves using a piston-driven gas generator and extraction pump to increase the pressure and temperature drop across the turbine without exceeding temperature and pressure limits at the turbine inlet. This allows increasing the specific output and efficiency of the plant by reducing pressure variations across the turbine. The extraction pump is driven by the gas generator to cool the turbine exhaust through a heat exchanger before entering the pump.

Improvements relating to Gas Turbine Plant We, ASSOCIATED BRITISH 'OIL
ENGINES LIMITED, of Duke's Court, Duke Sitreet, St.
James's, London, S.W.., a British Company do hereby declare the
invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and
the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described
in and by the following statement: -
This invention relates to gas turbine plant and has for an object to
provide arrangements thereof wherein the pressure 'drop and
temperature drop across the turbine may be increased without
increasing beyond practical limits the maximum temperature and/or
pressure at entry.
The invention is particularly applicable to plants embodying
free-piston I.C. gas generators or other reciprocating engine
compressor units supplying gas under pressure to an exhaust turbine.
The main object of this invention consists in increasing the specific
output and/or the efficiency of the unit.
A further object is to reduce variations in pressure ratio across the
turbine.
The invention consists in a gas turbine plant in which the turbine is
supplied with gas from a piston type gas generator and the exhaust
from the turbine is extracted through a heat exchanger provided for
cooling purposes by a positive displacement extraction pump driven by
2. the piston type gas generator.
The Figure of the accompanying drawing illustrates a gas turbine plant
in accordance with the invention.
The Figure shows a gas turbine plant supplied by a free-piston gas
generator, incorporating a vacuum pump device. The compressed hot
gases are supplied to turbine t at 7 and exhausted from the turbine at
8, whence they enter heat exchanger b and are supplied to the vacuum
pump through a series of non-return valves 9.
The gas generator comprises a combustion chamber piston 10 rigidly
coupled to two [Price double acting compressor pistons 11 and 12.
The piston 11 operates in an air compression space 13 which supplies,
air to, a combustion chamber. The piston 11 also operates, to compress
gas in a compression space 14. The piston 12 operates between a gas
compression space 15 on one side and a cushioning space 16 on the
other side.
The inlet pressure to the turbine is above atmospheric pressure
whereas the exhaust from the turbine is below atmospheric pressure,
and the heat exchanger b may have its cooling effect augmented by
liquid injection, prior to admission and/or in vacuum pump 6.
The non-return valves 9 may be replaced by a porting arrangement.
