Every year, the city of Villavicencio is the venue for the most important
folkloric event of the plains of Colombia and Venezuela.
What the Tournament offers
The streets of Villavicencio become an enormous “joropodrome”, where
1,600 couples from Bogotá and the departments of Meta, Arauca, Casanare,
Guaviare, Vichada, and Cundinamarca, delight all with choreographies
prepared for children’s, juvenile, and professional categories of joropo tap
dancing.

experience the Eastern Plains of Colombia.
World Coleo Encounter in Villavicencio:
The Most Important Event in the Art of Being a Cowboy

The Encuentro Mundial del Coleo is one of the most important events held
in America in the art of being a cowboy. It takes place in Villavicencio, a

2. city known as the “gateway to the eastern plains” and located only two
hours from the Colombian capital. Harp music, joropo dancing, and
delicious gastronomy are present throughout the entire festival.
The coleo is a sport, as well as a deep-rooted tradition in the savannas of
Colombia and Venezuela.
Folklore and Tourism International Festival – San Martín´s
Cuadrillas
Type of event: Competition, Encounter, Beauty Contest, Bullfight,
“Joropódromo”,
It is in November every year. It is carried out in the Colombian village of San
Martín. During the Festival the International Competition of Music from the
Plains takes place. This Competition grants awards for the Best Performer,
Best Dance Couple, Best Unpublished Song, Best Criollo Vocal Performer
and Best Contrapunteo Performance.
Events like the National Tournament of Coleado Bulls are part of the event as
well as the “Joropódromo”, and the National Beauty Contest. Other event held
during the Festival is the Day of “Sanmartinidad”, during which locals go out
to the streets wearing typical garments to celebrate San Martín de los Llanos´
Feast.
International Tournament of “Corrío” from the Plains
Type of event: Competition, Beauty Contest
Its first version was held in 1987 and takes place in April every year. It is carried
out in the Colombian city of Puerto Carreño, capital of the department of Vichada,
about 860 km from Bogotá. It is organized by the City Hall. As a member of the
Plains Node of the National Network of Colombian Traditional Music Fetsivals it
focuses on the music from the Plains of the country.
The Tournament has the purpose of recovering and spreading the “corrío”, one of
the indigenous literature expressions of the music culture of the Plains. The
Competition grants awards in the following categories: Best Unpublished “Corrío”,
Best Dance Couple, Best Male Llanera Voice, Best Female Llanera Voice and Best
Copla Performer.
