Barranquilla's Carnival is Colombia's most important folklore celebration and the biggest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro's. It is a cultural event held in Barranquilla where people demonstrate Caribbean traditions. The carnival was created in the 19th century and lasts four days each year from the second Saturday in January. During this time, the city's normal activities are suspended as residents participate in street dances, music, and masquerade parades.
