This snapshot, presented at the Digital Library Federation Forum in October 2014 discusses both work completed to expose repository data and plans to combine that data with library catalog and web site data to create a Solr-indexed data source that preserves context and provides thorough, useful, and sharable access to the information, collections, and resources at the Indiana University Libraries.

ways that libraries can adopt these methods to support
innovation and the digital humanities.

JSTOR Sustainability: Creating a Multidisciplinary Map for Researchers - ASEH...
JSTOR, a not-for-profit digital archive of scholarly journals, books, and other content, recently launched a new Labs team that partners with publishers, libraries and labs to develop new ways of organizing and navigating research literature in a digital environment. In this talk, Alex Humphreys, Director of JSTOR Labs, discusses the development of a new JSTOR project focused on Sustainability. The project, which incorporates scholarly and policy literature from the environmental humanities and social sciences, is being designed with guidance from scholars and subject librarians across disciplines to help students and scholars better understand and navigate the growing corpus of interdisciplinary research in this field. The talk will include a discussion of the challenges in building a library of scholarly materials on Sustainability, a demonstration of some of the functionality that has been developed for the Sustainability project in collaboration with scholars, including a semantic index and a collection of topic pages, and an overview of the research and development methodology that we use in developing new functionality for JSTOR—a process that has enabled us to develop and test new features in as little as a week’s time. The talk may be of especial interest to conference attendees who teach undergraduate students, and to graduate students and early-stage scholars who are considering alternative-academic careers in publishing or technology.

A theory of digital library metadata : enrich then filter
The document presents a theory of enriching digital library metadata through a social constructivist approach, then filtering it for users. It discusses limitations of current standards-based approaches and the need to incorporate socially constructed metadata. The theory is based on interviews with 57 librarians, students, and lecturers. It proposes separating metadata content enrichment, as a continuous process, from interface filtering. Enrichment should move from user-centered to user-driven and involve diverse metadata that better meets users' needs through seamless linking. The goal is "useful" rather than "perfect" metadata, with post-hoc user-driven filtering. The presenter provides an example of implementing this theory at Southampton Solent University Library.

Two characteristics of e-books – availability and flexibility – make them appealing in the academic environment. Access anytime, anywhere, and full text searching are functionalities highly valued by students and staff.
E-book collections in academic libraries are growing. Libraries are investing huge proportions of their budgets in e-books, but how do we know that e-books are worth it? Can we prove that libraries are getting value for their money? This presentation will look into statistics of usage and demonstrate what they can deliver. It will discuss different measures available to evaluate e-book usage. It will also look into what improvements can be done to better measure and evaluate the investment in e-books.

This document proposes core attributes that should be included in a community-defined information specification for biological databases. It lists attributes such as database name, contact information, date established, conditions of use, scope, standards, taxonomic coverage, data accessibility options, data release frequency, documentation, user support options, and data submission policy. It also provides information on the working group that started developing these guidelines shortly after the ISMB conference in July 2010, with over 30 members from 27 institutions. The group has formed a core part and is looking at implementing and publishing the proposed "BioDBcore" guidelines in the NAR 2011 issue and the DATABASE journal.

The 222nd meeting of ALISS (A Library and Information Support Service for the Social Sciences) was held at the British Library on May 2006. Jane Secker chaired the meeting which included representatives from various academic and special libraries. Jennie Grimshaw presented the financial report showing ALISS had established a solid financial position in its first year. Yvonne Hamblin won an award for her article in the ALISS Quarterly and committee members for 2006/7 were elected. Plans were discussed for future library visits, events and relaunching the ALISS website.

Future of Institutional Repositories

Repositories can enhance the curriculum by including student work and go beyond archiving to support collaboration and new forms of scholarly communication across disciplines. Challenges include gaining support, increasing awareness of repositories, and managing copyright issues. Solutions involve assessment, outreach to promote usage, and optimization of repositories. The future holds potential for including more community contributions and multimedia content to better support teaching and research.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. The potential benefits and the possible pitfalls will be highlighted, providing a balanced view of the subject.
We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup. Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
