Existing systems do not allow for correct gesture representation or eye contact between participants. A novel approach uses multi-view stereo analysis and patch sweeping refinement on GPUs to generate depth maps and synthesize virtual views for applications like a virtual eye contact engine. Initial results demonstrate the ability to generate interpolated views that could support these new interaction capabilities.

This was a talk I gave to a 4th year (senior-level) undergraduate class in Human Computer Interaction at Ryerson University. The talk focused on the different methods of displaying Stereoscopic 3D content, as well as the methods on generating such content. Technologies such as DLP 3DTVs, 3D theatres, and autostereoscopic displays are discussed. For the methods, 3D cameras, 2D to 3D conversion and other popular methods are discussed.

Biomimetics : Compound eyes
Understanding of light sensing organs in biology creates opportunities for the development of novel optic systems that cannot be available with existing technologies. The insect's eyes, i.e., compound eyes, are particularly notable for their exceptional interesting optical characteristics, such as wide fields of view and infinite depth-of-field. While the construction of man-made imaging systems with these characteristics is of interest due to potential for applications in micro air vehicles (MVAs) and clinical endoscopes, currently available devices offer only limited capabilities due to their use of compound lens systems in planar geometries. In this presentation, I discuss a complete set of materials, design layouts and integration schemes for digital cameras that mimic fully hemispherical compound eyes. Certain of the concepts extend recent advances in ‘stretchable electronics’ that provide previously unavailable options in design. I also discuss another interesting hierarchical micro- and nanostructures that can be found in eyes of night-active insects such as moth and mosquito. I present research trends on fabrication methods, optical characteristics, and various applications for artificial micro-/nanostructures that resemble ‘moth eye’ structure.

VR2.0: Making Virtual Reality Better Than Reality?
Computational near-eye displays aim to address the vergence-accommodation conflict in virtual reality by dynamically adjusting focus based on a user's gaze. Studies show that adaptive focus displays can improve visual clarity and comfort for most users compared to conventional VR displays. However, presbyopic users over age 40 may still experience some visual issues due to reduced ability to accommodate. Future near-eye displays could explore technologies like multiplane displays and light field displays to better support users of all ages.
Compressive Light Field Projection @ SIGGRAPH 2014
A compressive approach to light field synthesis with projection devices. We propose a novel, passive screen design that is combined with high-speed light field projection and nonnegative light field factorization. We demonstrate that the projector can alternatively achieve super-resolved and high dynamic range 2D image display when used with a conventional screen.

Driven by the recent resurgence of 3D cinema, depth cameras and stereoscopic displays are becoming commonplace in the consumer market. Introduced last October, Microsoft Kinect has already fostered gesture-based interaction for applications well beyond the intended Xbox 360 platform. Similarly, consumer electronics manufacturers have begun selling stereoscopic displays and inexpensive stereoscopic cameras. Most commercial 3D displays continue to require cumbersome eyewear, but inexpensive, glasses-free 3D displays are imminent with the release of the Nintendo 3DS.
At SIGGRAPH 2010, the Build Your Own 3D Display course demonstrated how to construct both LCD shutter glasses and glasses-free lenticular screens, providing Matlab-based code for batch encoding of 3D imagery. Biomimetics : Compound eyes
Understanding of light sensing organs in biology creates opportunities for the development of novel optic systems that cannot be available with existing technologies. The insect's eyes, i.e., compound eyes, are particularly notable for their exceptional interesting optical characteristics, such as wide fields of view and infinite depth-of-field. While the construction of man-made imaging systems with these characteristics is of interest due to potential for applications in micro air vehicles (MVAs) and clinical endoscopes, currently available devices offer only limited capabilities due to their use of compound lens systems in planar geometries. In this presentation, I discuss a complete set of materials, design layouts and integration schemes for digital cameras that mimic fully hemispherical compound eyes. Certain of the concepts extend recent advances in ‘stretchable electronics’ that provide previously unavailable options in design. I also discuss another interesting hierarchical micro- and nanostructures that can be found in eyes of night-active insects such as moth and mosquito. I present research trends on fabrication methods, optical characteristics, and various applications for artificial micro-/nanostructures that resemble ‘moth eye’ structure.

VR2.0: Making Virtual Reality Better Than Reality?
Computational near-eye displays aim to address the vergence-accommodation conflict in virtual reality by dynamically adjusting focus based on a user's gaze. Studies show that adaptive focus displays can improve visual clarity and comfort for most users compared to conventional VR displays. However, presbyopic users over age 40 may still experience some visual issues due to reduced ability to accommodate. Future near-eye displays could explore technologies like multiplane displays and light field displays to better support users of all ages.
Compressive Light Field Projection @ SIGGRAPH 2014
A compressive approach to light field synthesis with projection devices. We propose a novel, passive screen design that is combined with high-speed light field projection and nonnegative light field factorization. We demonstrate that the projector can alternatively achieve super-resolved and high dynamic range 2D image display when used with a conventional screen.

Blurclassification
This document presents a blur classification approach using a Convolution Neural Network (CNN). It discusses types of image degradation including blur, different blur models, and prior work on blur classification using features and neural networks. The proposed method uses a CNN to classify images into four blur categories (motion, defocus, box, and Gaussian blur) based on the images' frequency spectra. The method is evaluated on a dataset with over 2800 synthetically blurred images from 24 people performing 10 gestures. The CNN achieves an average accuracy of 97% for blur classification, outperforming alternatives using multilayer perceptrons or handcrafted features.
