  1. Chess players of different levels were shown a chessboard for a few seconds, depicting the placement of pieces at a random point in an actual game. They were then asked to recall the position of the pieces. The novice players were only able to recall the position of 5 or 6 pieces while the experts could recall nearly every piece on the board. However, when the experiment was repeated, but this time with the chess pieces randomly placed on the board - rather than positions from a real game - novices and experts performed the same.
