1. The experience of racing One Design sailboats since the beginning of times, improving the performance
and speed of a sailboat has been critical not only for transportation but for survival and expansion of
territories or conquers; in simple words: sailing fast has been part of human history. From a more fun
stand point, sailing faster than other boats around us is not only a matter of having a better designed
sailboat, now the fair play is to sail on similar or equal sailboats only to prove that the best skipper and
crew have the right to call themselves winners and not their boats.
Here is exactly where the principle of One Design sailboat racing comes into play. One Design, means
one type of boat is allowed to race another one of exact same design and characteristics, voiding the
advantages of having a faster, lighter and higher performance job that will overcome the flaws of the
crew and take them to the line first even if they did not perform too well.
Then several designers started working on expanding the range of options for several sailors: single
handed sailboats, double handed sailboats, ballasted keel sailboats, daggerboard dinghies and so on
until we have probably reached well over three hundred different classes of one design sailboats of all
sizes and designs: Sunfish, Laser, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Snipes, Flying Scots, Highlanders, Thistles, V-15,
Optimist, Open Bic, J/24, J/22, Viper 640, VX one Design, Contenders, 49er, 29er, Elliot 6M, Soling,
Yngling, Finn, Hobie 16, Hobie Tiger, Hobie Wild Cats, C2 catamaran, Skiff 18, A Cats, J/105, J109, Farr
30, Sonar, Farr 40, Catalina 22, J/80, Santana 20, Hobie 33, Olson 30, MC Scows, A Scows, E Scows,
Melges 24, Melges 20, Melges 17, Melges 32, J/70, Etchells, Star, Flying Dutchman, 470 International,
420 International, Club 420, Flying Juniors and many, many more that make an endless list of nicely and
strictly design and built boats that every single person regardless of their age, weight and sailing
aspirations will find a spot and the right place for him or her on a sailboat that is already design and
probably successfully growing as a class.
I events such as the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, Centro American and European
Championships, One Design classes are the only way sailboat racing can be done as It truly proves who
are the fastest, best performance and most talented crews.
The sailboat for these type of competition are usually brand new and supplied by the organization to
avoid any potential illegal modification to the hull, mast, boom, sails, deck hardware, running rigging or
standing rigging that may create and advantage to one team over another. Boats are assigned randomly
and then inspected, weighted as well as the crew. This brings the play field to as close as perfection as
possible.
