Stepper motors are used in a variety of applications that require incremental motion including computer peripherals, robotics, textile industries, and numerically-controlled machine tools. There are three main types of stepper motors: variable reluctance, permanent magnet, and hybrid. Variable reluctance stepper motors have wound stator poles and ferromagnetic rotor poles, while permanent magnet stepper motors have wound stator poles and permanent magnets on the rotor. Hybrid stepper motors combine aspects of variable reluctance and permanent magnet motors.
