1930至1932年間，高劍父有南亞之行，遍遊印度、孟買、尼泊爾諸國，得
觀古國獨有風情的勝景、建築、壁畫、佛像及風土人情、昆蟲動物，並作
大量寫生，是其藝術歷程上的一個高峰。這幀「象」圖是其摹寫印度亞真
達山洞遺存古代壁畫，以簡率樸實線條勾描沐浴水中的大象輪廓，寥寥數
筆，已充份表現巨獸的雄偉姿勢體型，氣韻古拙，能得古壁畫神韻。
From 1930 to 1932, Gao Jianfu travelled to Bombay in India, Nepal and
other countries in South Asia. The artist was given the opportunity to see
famous exotic landmarks, architecture, murals, Buddhist statues,
animals and insects and experienced the culture and customs as well. He
did a huge number of sketches and drawings during this journey, which
marked a prolific period in his artistic life. This piece titled “Elephant”
was copied from an ancient mural in the historical cave in Ajanta in India.
The silhouette of the elephant bathing in water is portrayed with simple
and spontaneous lines as well as concise brushwork. The massive
masculine body of the elephant and its heroic posture fully illustrate the
rustic and archaic flavour of ancient murals.
