Molecular diagnostic techniques play an important role in elucidating the mechanisms of disease by identifying molecular and pathway alterations. These techniques rely on labeled probes and antibodies and include karyotyping, amplification, blotting, in situ hybridization, microarrays, and next generation sequencing. Molecular assays are used for diagnostic, predictive, carrier, prenatal, and pharmacogenomic testing. The structure of DNA and variations that can lead to disease are also discussed.
