 Solution: a mixture of two or more types of
matter evenly spread out and not easily
separated
 Every sample of the solution will contain the exact
same parts, properties, and appearance
 Made up of two parts: a solute and a solvent
 Solute + Solvent = Solution
 Solute: the part of the solution that is being dissolved
(usually the lesser amount)
 Solvent: the part of the solution that dissolves the
solute (usually the greater amount)
 Solutions can contain materials that are in
different states
 Ex: Kool Aid
 Liquid solvent = water
 Solid solute = Kool Aid mix and sugar
 Factors that affect how fast a solid
dissolves:
 Size
 Temperature
 Stirring
 Concentration: the amount of solute that is
dissolved in the solution
 A concentrated solution has a lot of solute in it
 A dilute solution has a little bit of solute in it
 Dilute means “thinned”
