WWF-UK’s economic policy programme
• Priority programme for WWF-UK (and wider network)
• Tackling economic drivers / threats key to securing gains for nature
• Protecting and improving nature is a major economic opportunity
• Ambition = to help the UK transition to an economy that is resource-
efficient, low-carbon and invests in the natural asset base
• Focus on HM Treasury in the UK
• Key strands:
• Influencing the UK economic policy, including the annual budget
• Supporting the Natural Capital Committee, including ‘25 year plan
for nature’
• Supporting strategic research and evidence
• Engaging with parliamentarians, civil servants and businesses

• Report launched in March 2015,
with then Chief Secretary to the
Treasury, other MPs and
businesses
• Synthesis of latest evidence/data
• Focus on business and wider
economic case
• Suite of policy proposals,

Supporting research (natural capital)
Various studies underway (to feed into Greener Budget Report and 25
year plan engagement):
• Policy measures to help drive private sector innovation and
investment (with WCL, business and Defra/Treasury) – paper and
workshop
• Piloting a natural capital ‘stress test’ (with eftec and London School of
Economics)
• Priority natural capital investments (with eftec)
• Options for incorporating natural capital evidence into the budget (with
PWC and ICAEW)
• Other scoping studies (e.g. environmentally harmful subsidies)
Aim is to work collaboratively with Treasury/Defra and others, to
maximise policy utility
