1. 5. BIBLICAL
CHARACTER OF SIN
Offering the nature of God, breaching His standards and destroying our
relationship with Him.
2. BIBLICAL
VERSES
PSALMS 51:4
Against thee, thee only, have I
sinned, and done this evil in thy
sight: that thou mightest be
justified when thou speakest, and
be clear when thou judgest.
ROMANS 8:7
Because the carnal mind is enmity
against God: for it is not subject to
the law of God, neither indeed can
be.
GENESIS 6:5
And God saw that the wickedness
of man was great in the earth, and
that every imagination of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually.
JOB 14:4
Who can bring a clean thing out of
an unclean? not one.
JEREMIAH 17:5,9
Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the
man that trusteth in man, and
maketh flesh his arm, and whose
heart departeth from the Lord.
The heart is deceitful above all
things, and desperately wicked:
who can know it?
20XX 2
All we like sheep have gone
astray; we have turned everyone to
his own way; and the Lord hath laid
on him the iniquity of us all.
ISAIAH 53:6
3. SINS FOR COMISSION OR OMISSION
THOUGHTS-
DESIRES
When we do not set our minds
on things above (Col. 3:2) or
when we fail to love God with
all our hearts and minds (Luke
10:27). We are commanded to
“take every thought captive to
obey Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5) and
to “rejoice in the Lord always”
WORDS
Paul in his letter to the Ephesians
exhorts the church to speak the
truth in love and to speak “only
such as is good for building up”
(Eph. 4:15, 29). We should speak
truthfully (1 Peter 3:10), giving
words of encouragement to one
another (1 Thess. 5:11). Our
speech should be gracious (Col.
4:6) and gentle (Prov. 15:4).
DEEDS
The Bible contains a number of
positive “one another” commands. For
example, we are called to “be at peace
with one another”, to be “kind to one
another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another”, and “to seek to do good to
one another, and to everyone”. The
prophet Micah writes, “He has told
you, O man, what is good; and what
does the Lord require of you but to do
justice, and to love kindness, and to
walk humbly with your God?”.
The Westminster Shorter Catechism defines sin as “any lack of conformity to, or
transgression of, the law of God” (WSC 14)
WHILE SINS OF COMMISSION ARE OFTEN BLATANT AND DELIBERATE—TRANSGRESSING A
KNOWN LAW OR COMMAND—SINS OF OMISSION CAN BE SUBTLE AND SNEAKY.

QUESTION 8
20XX 4
Q. But are we so corrupt that we are totally
unable to do any good and inclined toward all
evil?
A. Yes,1 unless we are born again by the Spirit of
God.
5. THE SIN IS PRIVATIO BONI [THE
ABSENCE OF GOOD].

NOT POSSIBLE TO NOT COMMIT
SIN]

6. ¿ES DIOS AUTOR DEL
MAL?
Thus, we see that God does not, immediately or per se, instill iniquity in the
wicked; but, as Luther expresses it, it mightily spurs them to action, and retains
those gracious influences of His Spirit, without which all action is necessarily
evil. That God directly or remotely spurs bad men as well as good to action
cannot be denied by anyone but atheists, or those who carry their notions of
free will and human independence so high as to exclude to the Deity of all real
operation in and among his creatures, which is little short of atheism.
Every deed done, whether good or bad, is done with might and by power
immediately derived from God Himself, “For in him we live and move and have
our being; as some of your own poets have also said: Because we are his
lineage.» [Acts 17:28]. As, in the beginning, without Him nothing was made that
was made, so now, without Him, nothing is made that is made. We have no
power or faculty, whether bodily or intellectual, but what we receive from God,
which subsists with Him, and is exercised in submission to His will and design.
It is He who created, preserves, acts and directs all things. But it by no means
follows, from these premises, that God is therefore the cause of sin, because
sin is nothing more than άνομία, illegality, lack of conformity with divine law (1
John 3:4), a mere deprivation of righteousness; consequently, being a purely
negative thing, it cannot have a positive or efficient cause, but only a negative
and deficient one, as several learned men have observed.
