1. WHAT IS SIN
What exactly is Sin?
Do you understand how the bible defines it?
As Christians, we are to avoid Sin â but how can we avoid sin if we donât fully comprehend what
it is?
The Bible defines sin in several scriptures, each of which gives us a better understanding of what it is.
But, before we look at these scriptures that define sin, we should first understand what the word
SIN means.
2. ⢠The public has no interest in talking about sin today.
-To say that we are corrupt at birth?
-To say we are all born with an evil nature, a desire to violate the law of God and to dethrone God
and replace Him with ourselves?
-To say we are incapable of doing anything good? Our culture doesnât want anything defined as SIN.
Everything is simply a lifestyle choice. The idea of guilt is considered medieval, obsolete, and
unhealthy.
⢠Politicians, moralists, educators, and sociologists try to fix society, but they canât do it because they donât deal
with the reality of what is in the heart of MAN⌠âof what is SINâ.
⢠All humanity has a vile, rebellious, corrupt nature. Our thought-life is corrupt, Our emotions are corrupt, Our will
is corrupt, and Our behavior is corrupt.
Talking About Sin
3. In Genesis Chapter 3 Explains the human dilemma.
All the problems in the universe like,
Physical problems
Spiritual problems
Moral problems
Social problems
Economic problems,
Political problems
â have their origin in the events of this historic account in Genesis Chapter 3.
When God completed His perfect creation, it was âvery good.â There was no evil, no disorder, no chaos, no conflict, no pain, no discord,
no disease, no decline, no death. But now we live our whole lives in a perpetual struggle with all of those things.
4. When many of us consider "What is sin?" we think of violations of the Ten
Commandments.
Even then, we tend to think of murder and adultery as "major" sins compared with
lying, cursing, or idolatry.
The truth is that SIN, as defined in the original translations of the Bible,
"Hamartema" means "to miss the mark." The mark, in this case, is the standard
of perfection. An act of which does not hit the will of God's target.
5. As the Creator, God has the right to set standards for mankind.
We are accountable to him for our actions. â Romans 14:12. So then each
of us shall give an account concerning our deeds to God.
In that light, it is clear that we are all sinners.
The Apostle Paul says in Romans 3:23:
"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
6. God sets high standards for us in finding and overcoming the sins
that affect us.
Ultimately, these definitions tell us that SIN is anything that is contrary to the
will of God or doesnât express the holy character of God.
That is the standard God has set for us, as seen by these definitions.
7. SIN - is any action, feeling, or thought that goes against Godâs standards.
It includes breaking Godâs laws by doing what is wrong, or unrighteous, in
Godâs sight .
( 1 John 3:4; 5:17 )
Sin - is transgression or disobedience to Godâs laws. (1 John 3:4 )
âTo transgress means âto step acrossâ or âto go beyond a set boundary or limit.â
âto miss the mark.â
8. What Is Sin - A Biblical Perspective.
Sin is mentioned hundreds of times in the Bible, starting with the "original" sin when Adam and Eve ate of the tree of
knowledge.
Often it seems as if sin is simply the violation of any of God's laws, including the Ten Commandments.
In 1 John 5:17, we find a much broader definition of SIN.
âAll unrighteousness is Sin.â.
âEvery wrong action is Sin.â
âEvery act of wrong-doing is sin.â
âAny kind of wrongdoing is sin.â
âAll iniquity is sin.â
Other meanings of this word SIN and its verb form are âevildoers,â âdishonest,â âunjust,â âwickedness,â âto be unfair,â
âto harm,â âto mistreat,â âto hurtâ and âto wrong another person.â
9. Tragically, sin in any amount that will distance us from God.
"Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to
hear,"
says Isaiah 59:1-2."But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
your sins have hidden His face from you so that He will not hear."
10. The Nature of Sin
Now letâs look at the nature of sin.
1. First, SIN is defilement. It stains the white cloth, It is ugliness across the face of beauty. When a sinner really sees
his sin, he sees it for what it is. Ezekiel 20:43 says, âThere you will remember your ways and all your deeds with
which you have defiled yourselves, and you will abominate yourselves in your own sight for all the evil things that
you have done.â
2. Second, SIN is rebellion. The sinner tramples on Godâs law, crushes on Godâs character, and fully crosses Godâs
will, Mocking God. Sin is at its core, rebellion.
3. Third, SIN is ingratitude. Everything we have, everything we are, is from God. Paul says the wrath of God is
revealed from heaven, because âWhen they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankfulâ
(Romans 1:21). All the food the sinner ever eats, God gave him. All the air the sinner ever breathes, God gave him.
All the joys the sinner ever experienced, God provided. The sinner eagerly embraces Godâs graces and mercy and
then betrays Him by being the friend of Godâs enemy, Satan.
11. There are two types of sin every human will commit Sins of
commission and sins of omission.
1. Sins of Commission Defined: Sins of commission are sins that we commit by doing something we shouldnât do.
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilerâs nor extortioners, shall not inherit
the kingdom of Godâ (1 Corinthians 6:10)
Here are some other examples of sins of commission:
Sexual sins: Adultery, fornication, bestiality, homosexuality, bisexuality, molestation, pornography, etc.
Theft, covetousness, etc.
Murder, physical abuse, bullying, mental abuse
Gossip, slander, backbiting, etc.
Lying, manipulating, cursing, etc. and much more.
12. 2. Sins of Omission Defined: As sins we commit by not doing something we should do.
This is a sin that is easy to hide from others. Itâs difficult to commit a sin of commission and get away with it, but it is quite easy to commit a sin of
omission without others knowing. Therefore, I think this type of sin is perhaps the most dangerous for us in our Christian walk.
The Bible also describes sins of omission â that is, failing to do what is right. ( James 4:17 )
Here are just some examples of sins of omission we may commit:
1. Failing to pray regularly, or failing to pray for others in our lives. Consider what the prophet Samuel said in the Old Testament: âMoreover, as for me,
God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right wayâ (1 Samuel 12:23).
2. Failing to tithe or be faithful stewards in our finances. Consider the words of Malachi: âWill a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein
have we robbed thee? In tithes and offeringsâ (Malachi 3:8).
13. 3. Failing to help another person, when we have both the capacity and a nudging from the Holy Spirit to do so. Consider this passage in James:
âTherefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sinâ (James 4:17).
4. Failing to provide for our family, especially those of our own household. The Bible teaches that this is not only a sin, it even goes as far as to
say that a Christian neglecting this is even worse than unbelievers. What a tragedy in todayâs society that many men will impregnate a woman,
and then leave with no intention of supporting her or raising his own child : â But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his
own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidelâ (1 Timothy 5:8).
5. Failing to read and study the Bible regularly. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the WORD of God.
6. Failing to fellowship with other Christians or attend some type of church fellowship: âNot forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as
the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approachingâ (Hebrews 10:25).
There are many other types of sins of omission. In summary, we commit a sin of omission when we neglect to do
something God commands us to do.
14. Where sin came from / The Origin of sin.
The origin of sin into the universe, according to the 5 passages
of the scriptures in the Bible.
Lucifer introduce SIN before the creation of the earth, Lucifer led a wicked angels and revolt in Heaven against God
Jehovah, he attempt to dethrone the rightful King. The sin of Lucifer was PRIDE.
1. Ezekiel 28: 11 - 12 â 19 ââYou were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
2. Isaiah 14: 12 â 15, Pride / I will ascend to heaven, I will establish my throne in heaven.
3. Luke 10: 18, He said to them, âI saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
4. 1 John 3: 8, Whoever practices Sin is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning.
5. Revelation 12: 3 â 4, John saw Satan, as the red Dragon.
15. âLet us Consider this Questionsâ
Is P R I D E a problem in our world today?
Is this same Sin in the hearts of men today?
Are there men who have a problem with SELF-WILL?
Is there any person who does not have a problem with SELF-WILL?
Are there people who have a spirit of INDEPENDENCE?
In what forms does this thinking display itself in our world today?
16. Here is what Lucifer should
have said:
My beauty and my wisdom and my power have all
come from God who has made me what I am. All
that I have I have received from God my Creator.
Therefore my proper response to Him is to thank
Him and praise Him and be what He wants me to
be, for He is such a great God!
Here is what Lucifer did
say:
How beautiful I am! How wise I am! How
powerful I am! God is not the only one who is
great. I am great also. Why should all the angels
worship God? Should they not worship me just as
they do God?
I WILL BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH!
(Compare Isaiah14:13-14).
17.
18. Isaiah 14:12-15
12
How you have fallen from heaven morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!
13
You said in your heart, âI will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne
above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of Mount of congregation.
14
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.â
15
But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.
19. Proverbs 16:18
18
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
Matthew 25:41
41
âThen he will say to those on his left, âDepart from me, you who are
cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
20. Let us consider the five "I WILLS" of Lucifer as found in Isaiah 14:13-14
1) "I WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN." Lucifer wanted to mount up or scale to the heavens. He desired to occupy the
highest heavens: to probe, and to penetrate the kingdom of the infinite God. He wanted to have a very HIGH
position!
2) "I WILL EXALT MY THRONE ABOVE THE STARS OF GOD." Luciferâs position and service before Godâs throne
was not enough.
He wanted a throne from which he could exercise final authority and make decisions pertaining to the angelic
host ("the stars of God").
He wanted to rule over all the angels. God had made him an exalted angel, but Lucifer wanted to be exalted even
more.
(He was not content to shine as the "morning star"; he wanted to shine as the star of stars--with a brilliance that would
far outshine all the other stars (even as the sunâs brightness makes all the other stars fade away so that you cannot even
see them during daylight hours).
21. 3) "I WILL SIT ALSO UPON THE MOUNT OF THE CONGREGATION." He desired to sit or be enthroned in the
highest place having all the angelic assemblies in submission to him. He wanted to be the Center of attention. He wanted to
be IDOLIZED by all.
4) "I WILL ASCEND ABOVE THE HEIGHTS OF THE CLOUDS." "Clouds" are often used in the Bible to speak of the
glory of God (see Matthew 24:30; Acts 1:9; Rev. 1:7).
Lucifer coveted Godâs glory for his own.
He failed to acknowledge that his glory and beauty all came from and was dependent upon God.
In his sinful pride, Lucifer wanted a glory that would impress and dazzle all creatures.
5) "I WILL BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH." He wanted to be EQUAL with God and to take Godâs place as Possessor and
Ruler of all.
He wanted to become a completely independent creature who was responsible to no one.
22. The humble creature wants to LIFT UP GOD. The proud creature wants to LIFT UP SELF
(Ezekiel 28:17).
The humble creature realizes that everything he possesses he
has Received from God (1 Cor. 4:7).
The proud creature takes credit himself for all that he has and
forgets that he would have absolutely nothing apart from God.
The humble creature says, "NOT MY WILL, but Godâs will be
done." (See Luke 22:42).
The proud creature says, "I WILL (SELF- WILL), and I care little
about GODâS WILL!"
The humble creature is DEPENDENT.
("I need God for everything!")
The proud creature is INDEPENDENT. ("I donât need God, and I
donât want God. Iâll do my own thing in my own way for my own
glory.")
23. The origin of sin into the World is Man, while an angel Lucifer
introduced sin into the universe, it was a man invited sin into the
world.
â˘Genesis 2: 16 - 17. God command the man to eat every fruits of the trees in
the garden except the tree of knowledge the good and evil.
â˘Genesis 3: 6 . And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food
she took it and eat the fruit of knowledge..
24. ( Genesis 3:1- 6 )
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had
made. And he said to the woman, âIndeed, has God said, âYou shall not eat from any
tree of the gardenâ?â The woman said to the serpent, âFrom the fruit of the trees of the
garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God
has said, âYou shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'â The serpent said to the
woman, âYou surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes
will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.â When the woman saw
that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was
desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her
husband with her, and he ate.
25. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, Sin entered into our world, and
everything went from being very good to being very bad.
The Bible says, âThrough one man [Adam], sin entered into the world, and
death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinnedâ
(Romans 5:12)
Weâve all come from Adam and Eve, so we inherited what theologians call
original sin. When Adam sinned, he brought death on himself and everybody
else
26. How Satan tempted the woman? âEveâ
Eveâs Temptation by Satan in 3 Ways.
1. Lust of the flesh â Desire
2. Lust of the eyes â Pleasure
3. Pride of life â Self â Centered
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food [lust of the flesh], and that it was pleasant to the eyes [lust of
the eyes], and a tree to be desired to make one wise [the pride of life], she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and
gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eatâ (Genesis 3)
Simply stated that, these are âthree temptations to sinâ that every human will experience in this
world.
27. Three Temptations of Sin
We read about these three temptations in First John:
âFor all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of
the Father, but is of the worldâ (1 John 2:16).
Here, John gives us three temptations that are of the world.
Every adult human in history has been tempted by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
It is important to be aware of these three areas of temptation that we will all face, for every sin we commit
will be preceded by at least one of these temptations.
1. What is the Lust of the Flesh? The lust of the flesh is that temptation to feel physical pleasure from some sinful
activityâto do something to make the flesh feel satisfied. It can involve any type of sinful activity that will bring pleasure to the body.
28. Examples of the âlust of the fleshâ include the following:
⢠Sexual sins
⢠Gossip
⢠Physical violence
⢠Drug use (marijuana, pills, cocaine, alcohol, etc.) and more.
The Apostle Paul gives us a nice example of the âworks of the flesh,â many of which are works we do when
we submit to the lust of the flesh.
âNow the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry,
witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying's, murders, drunkenness, revelling's, and such
like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the
kingdom of Godâ (Galatians 5:19-21)
29. 2. What is the Lust of the Eyes? The lust of the eyes is that temptation to look upon things we shouldnât look
upon, or to have things that we shouldnât have. In other words, it is to cast our eyes upon something with desire or
pleasure, even though God has told us not to look upon those things.
⢠The sin of coveting is a prime example of the result of submitting to the lust of the eyes. We rarely hear of the sin of coveting in
todayâs time, but âthou shalt not covetâ was the 10th commandment that God gave to the Israelites.
⢠To covet means to have a yearning or a strong desire to have something that rightfully belongs to someone else. âThatâs not fair that he
has such a beautiful wife. I want her as my wife,â is a prime example. Other examples of the lust of the eyes include looking at
pornography, desiring othersâ material possessions, status, appearance, etc. Itâs the recognition that something sinful has visual appeal, and
then wanting it for the sake of itâs visual appeal.
⢠Consider this passage in Second Samuel with regards to King David and Bathsheba, the woman with whom David would soon commit
adultery:
âAnd it came to pass in an evening tide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the kingâs house: and from the roof
he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look uponâ ( 2 Samuel 11:2; ).
30. 3. What is the Pride of Life? The pride of life is that sinful temptation for excess greatness or power that we all
feel the temptation to attain.
Pride itself is one of the sins that God hates most. It is the sin that made Lucifer (the beautiful angel) turn into Satan (the
adversary). Some examples of this sin include the following:
⢠Desiring to get credit or glory for things that others (or God) did
⢠Desiring for others to worship us or hold us in excess esteem, âto make a name for ourselvesâ
⢠Desiring to feel valued or more important than others around us
⢠Desiring to have positions of power over others in a way that puffs up our own ego for the sake of bragging rights (Jesus said
that those who desire to be great should be the greatest servant)
⢠Consider the words of Satan himself, who was so filled with pride that he wanted to be God:
⢠âI will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most Highâ (Isaiah 14:14).
31. The consequences of Sin
1. The consequence Upon Lucifer Sin: As Lucifer was the first sinner, he lost his position as
anointed cherubim in heaven. ( Ezekiel 28: 14 ) and became earth depraved dragon,.
Revelation 12: 7.
The future consequences of Lucifer sinned. the devil will someday be forever cast into the lake of
fire, a place God himself prepared for the universe's first sinner.
(Matthew 25: 41, Revelation 20: 10)
2. The consequence Upon Man Sin: When Adam open the door for Sin. It brings death.
In the Bible the meaning of Death is Separation: means the perfect relationship between God and
humanity was broken.
32. There are 2 kinds of Death
1. Physical death: God created Adam with the possibilities of living forever, but because Adam sinned he
experienced physical death, that is, the separation of his body and soul. ( Genesis
5:5, Psalms 90:10, John 19: 30 )
2. Spiritual death: Because of sin, all unsaved people will someday be forever separated from God in the lake of
fire. This referred to the second death. ( Matthew 7: 23 ) Revelation 2: 11 , 20: 6, 14. 21: 18 )
The ultimateâconsequence of sin is death.
⢠The Bible says that âthe wages of sin is deathâ (Romans 6:23). This not only refers to physical death, but also to
eternal separation from God in hell.
⢠" But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will
not hearâ (Isaiah 59:2). This is the foremost consequence of manâs rebellion against God.
33. God's permanent solution to sin
Jesus is the Saviour. Jesus is more than a good man, a help if we want him, a suggested
improvement, or one good way to God--he is the Saviour.
⢠Scripture never presents Jesus as the Christ with an attitude of indefiniteness.
⢠He is never presented as an optional way to God.
⢠He is the essential key to God's permanent solution to the problem of sin.
⢠He did live without sinning.
⢠He did die for human sin.
⢠He did carry our sins in his body as he died.
⢠Only he can destroy the sins of a person.
34. If you feel that exaggerates Jesus' importance as Saviour, listen to scripture:
⢠The evening before his death, Jesus made this statement:
John 14:6, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
⢠Shortly after Jesus was presented to the Jews as the resurrected Christ, Peter made this statement:
Acts 4:12, And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given
among men by which we must be saved.
⢠Much later, Paul wrote:
1 Timothy 2:5, For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
35. CONCLUSION
âWhat is the solution to sinâŚ
" They were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, âBrothers, what shall we do?ââ
The answer was simple yet profound: âRepent!â (Acts 2:37-38).
Repentance - Death
Baptism in water - Burial
Received the Holy Spirit - Resurrection
⢠Jesusâ first words when He began His ministry were, âThe time has come. The kingdom of God is near.
⢠Repent and believe the good news!â (Mark 1:15). What is the good news? âFor God so loved the world that He gave
His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal lifeâ (John 3:16).
⢠The consequence of sin is death, but âthe gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lordâ (Romans 6:23).
