A Pragmatic Reference Architecture for The Internet of ThingsRick G. Garibay
We already know that the Internet of Things is big. It isn't something that's coming. It's already here. From manufacturing to healthcare, retail and hospitality, transportation, utilities and energy, the shift from Information Technology to Operational Technology and the value that this massive explosion of data can provide is taking the world by storm.
But IoT isn't a product. It's not something you can buy. As with any gold rush, snake oil abounds. The potential is massive and the good news is that the technology and platforms are already here!
But how do you get started? What are the application and networking protocols at play? How do you handle the ingestion of massive, real-time streams of data? Where do you land the data? What kind of insights does the data at scale provide? How do you make sense of it and/or take action on the data in real time scaling to hundreds if not hundreds of thousands of devices per deployment?
In this session, Rick G. Garibay will share a pragmatic reference architecture based on his experience working with dozens of customers in the field and provide an insider’s view on some real-world IoT solutions he's led. He'll demystify what IoT is and what it isn't, discuss patterns for addressing the challenges inherent in IoT projects and how the most popular public cloud vendors are already providing the capabilities you need to build real-world IoT solutions today.
“In the current market, companies realize that the device itself is not enough. What’s more important is the service around it. Take Philips for example, and see how they managed to covert a basic light bulb business into a lucrative smart lighting experience.
The question is
1. How do we do it?
2. To choose from 300+ IoT platforms?
3. To do it by myself?
4. Where do the cloud providers take place?
All the answers – in the session.”

Internet of Things is a hot topic today. Many companies are trying to create new business applications on a concept of IoT such as smart city, connected vehicle or smart grid. The platform for IoT applications has some unprecedented characteristics: (1) needs to accept huge number of connections simultaneously (2) needs to be highly reliable and secure (3) needs to be highly scalable.
We have designed, prototyped and evaluated a highly reliable IoT platform for collecting and storing large-scale data.
We explained our use case and architecture of IoT platform. We are tackling the following very high requirements during the process of prototyping and evaluating the platform.
• Receiving and storing messages from over 10M clients concurrently
• Highly reliable architecture of message broking without losing messages
• Instant scale-out to process burst traffic rapidly
We also discussed how we can adopt OpenStack to IoT backend and share ideas for its enhancement.

An Approach to Detecting Writing Styles Based on Clustering Techniques

Institution:
VIIT Pune, India
Abstract:
This paper proposes a system to differentiate between human-generated and AI-generated texts using stylometric analysis. The system analyzes text files and classifies writing styles by employing various clustering algorithms, such as k-means, k-means++, hierarchical, and DBSCAN. The effectiveness of these algorithms is measured using silhouette scores. The system successfully identifies distinct writing styles within documents, demonstrating its potential for plagiarism detection.
Introduction:
Stylometry, the study of linguistic and structural features in texts, is used for tasks like plagiarism detection, genre separation, and author verification. This paper leverages stylometric analysis to identify different writing styles and improve plagiarism detection methods.
Methodology:
The system includes data collection, preprocessing, feature extraction, dimensional reduction, machine learning models for clustering, and performance comparison using silhouette scores. Feature extraction focuses on lexical features, vocabulary richness, and readability scores. The study uses a small dataset of texts from various authors and employs algorithms like k-means, k-means++, hierarchical clustering, and DBSCAN for clustering.
Results:
Experiments show that the system effectively identifies writing styles, with silhouette scores indicating reasonable to strong clustering when k=2. As the number of clusters increases, the silhouette scores decrease, indicating a drop in accuracy. K-means and k-means++ perform similarly, while hierarchical clustering is less optimized.
Conclusion and Future Work:
The system works well for distinguishing writing styles with two clusters but becomes less accurate as the number of clusters increases. Future research could focus on adding more parameters and optimizing the methodology to improve accuracy with higher cluster values. This system can enhance existing plagiarism detection tools, especially in academic settings.
NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER IN CONDENSING HEAT EXCHANGERS...ssuser7dcef0
Power plants release a large amount of water vapor into the
atmosphere through the stack. The flue gas can be a potential
source for obtaining much needed cooling water for a power
plant. If a power plant could recover and reuse a portion of this
moisture, it could reduce its total cooling water intake
requirement. One of the most practical way to recover water
from flue gas is to use a condensing heat exchanger. The power
plant could also recover latent heat due to condensation as well
as sensible heat due to lowering the flue gas exit temperature.
Additionally, harmful acids released from the stack can be
reduced in a condensing heat exchanger by acid condensation. reduced in a condensing heat exchanger by acid condensation.
Condensation of vapors in flue gas is a complicated
phenomenon since heat and mass transfer of water vapor and
various acids simultaneously occur in the presence of noncondensable
gases such as nitrogen and oxygen. Design of a
condenser depends on the knowledge and understanding of the
heat and mass transfer processes. A computer program for
numerical simulations of water (H2O) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
condensation in a flue gas condensing heat exchanger was
developed using MATLAB. Governing equations based on
mass and energy balances for the system were derived to
predict variables such as flue gas exit temperature, cooling
water outlet temperature, mole fraction and condensation rates
of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The equations were solved
using an iterative solution technique with calculations of heat
and mass transfer coefficients and physical properties.
Harnessing WebAssembly for Real-time Stateless Streaming PipelinesChristina Lin
Traditionally, dealing with real-time data pipelines has involved significant overhead, even for straightforward tasks like data transformation or masking. However, in this talk, we’ll venture into the dynamic realm of WebAssembly (WASM) and discover how it can revolutionize the creation of stateless streaming pipelines within a Kafka (Redpanda) broker. These pipelines are adept at managing low-latency, high-data-volume scenarios.
Using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) for pavements is crucial to achieving sustainability. Implementing RCA for new pavement can minimize carbon footprint, conserve natural resources, reduce harmful emissions, and lower life cycle costs. Compared to natural aggregate (NA), RCA pavement has fewer comprehensive studies and sustainability assessments.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Many people are using the cloud today
From consumers who stores their pictures and music
to Corporate America who use the cloud with in their facilities for their CRM like salesforce and ERP systems.
So why not the building and the devices that are with in it…..
Today, we will speak about 5 good reason why she should push BACnet data to the cloud. And 1 good reason why not to do it.
What's not to love
20 years of BACnet technology in the market.
1000’s and 1000’s of devices connected.
Grown to 60% world wide market share.
Incredible success story
Hallmark of good standard is its ability to adapt over time.
Anything that is to ridged falls by the way side with the next big technology leap.
BACnet has what you need in well structured standard.
That is why it continues to be the most popular building automation protocols in the world
We were talking with our engineers about BACnet and where is came from. He went running to his book shelf and pulled this out.
Here is our dog eared copy of the Ashrea standard for BACnet. I believe is dated 199X. I can see but it is extremely out.
Our heritage and legacy as a company goes back a long way.
You see 37 up there. We have a vender ID of 37. There are over 1000 today. We have been doing this a very long time.
How long people have been working with Bacnet is important
when you consider the source of knowledge, the source of the products and the companies that you are working with.
We did not wake up one day say everyone is doing, lets get into this bacnet thing.
This one that we believe in.
We have been contributing to and following BACnet for years and years.
A problem with a specification that has been around for 20 years is the weight of expectations.
“Success Breads Success”
People also say BACnet would be great, if we could add this or put that in it.
OR we throw through these tweaks into it and we can go after this part of the market or it solves this other problem.
This becomes very difficult.
I have seen other standards collapse under weight of expectations of features and technologies.
The key to maintain success in the market place is focus.
This is way we have focused work groups to flush out these new requirements for BACnet.
There are other things that need to be addressed. Interoperability which is addressed through BTL, and Security is one of them will need to be really looked at in the future.
With this, it is very easy for a standard to get defocused. Especially when it has become very successful. People do put a lot of expectations on it.
The next step for BACnet is to make its information available in the cloud and for people using this technology remotely.
A lot of people do cloud technology because it is the hot new thing.
Everyone thinks they need cloud.
Unless your delivering some business value with some practical application of the technology, it is not going to take off and hold interest.
Here we have outline a partial application for the cloud which has 4 key points.
1. Extract intelligence
2. To enable Mfgs to add value
I highlight MFGs because there are already a lot of BMS systems out there that are providing cloud based access. That is fine because that is a different part of the market.
What about mfg’s/people that are deploying equipment in the field, how are they able to take advantage of a cloud based system to get better information about their equipment?
3 Use this cloud based system to improve field support.
4 Use the knowledge that you gain by pushing all this data in the cloud to gain a competitive advantage through better knowing their equipment.
This is what you should expect from a practical application.
Bacnet network and BMS is already putting information into the cloud. click
As a mfg, there a lot of BACnet clouds. Click
So you as an OEM mfg, what are the 5 things you are going want out of a cloud.
These are the 5 points
1 remote access and visibility
See what my equipment is doing in the field.
Want to help my support people gain access into that equipment.
I want the ability to remote login and attach – Like being able to tunnel into product’s webserver
Overall this gives better visibility into the products in the field.
People like to see their data.
Numbers are flat.
Charts and grafts are much easier to a pattern in my data. And see what is going right and wrong.
Analytics/trending
Now that I have this data, I can apply intelligence to it.
Look for trends over time where things might be going wrong.
Example – Weil-McClain
Capture all events in an ignition sequence that happens with in 2 seconds and suck that data in. They want to look at 100’s of ignition sequences over weeks and months to find where there are variabilities. That the sequence in operating properly.
4 Alarming and Notification.
I would like to know that there is problem before my customer does.
As an OEM, I can be notified that there is an issue. I can take actions Roll a truck, notify and on site supervisor that their a problem before some knows it.
Wattson study
That is a value add that cloud based analytics can provide.
Product registrations are lacking. No card.
As an OEM, you want to know when a product was sold and who it was sold to.
Using the cloud, you can start the support and Warranty process.
It allows you to manage your customer base and customer experience much better.
We can automate the process and suck that information a deliver it to the manufacturer.
Lets think about how we built a practical cloud.
Can we – Yes for all for.
With all this, mfgs can a competitive advantage by using the cloud.
If that is what you are trying accomplish, how do you do it?
The key thing about BACnet is the metadata is already there. So you need a good BACnet IoT gateway to get the data up to the cloud.
IoT gateways
Explorer
Connectivity
You could build your own.
Amazon offers a service, platform and you do it your self. This approach will cost $1000’s of dollars
The big manufactures all have their cloud.
It has taken us 3 years to get where are with our cloud. Any one else wanting a cloud it going to take the same time.
Your are working with people who are not cloud developers and this is distracting you from building the best darn piece of equipment for your market.
I would urge you to buy. We take the risk off the table and offering free, secure data access through 22.
Enter on BACnet IoT Gateway
Enter on Cortex reads data
So I made case of you why you want the cloud.
Lets talk about why you would not.
Hoodies/Hackers that lie in the deep dark web.
More data you put in the cloud, the more risk there is.
We at SMC take this extremely seriously.
We have a lot of protection built on the Amazon platform to protect the data and identities of the people use the cloud system.
I would be happy to deliver our security white paper to explain our position on protecting cloud data but we do an extremely good job of locking up and protecting the information.

The thing about the hoodies: it not a kid in a his bedroom.
It is a business with a row of “employees” sitting at a desk socking up the data an selling it on a store from on the dark web.
You can by anything you on the dark web. This big business.
It is important for you to pick venders that have a strong foundation in security that is willing to work with you to insure you have data protection and data privacy.
The last thing you want it to be person where someone hacks your building and it goes dark. CLICK
