Stone was an important construction material for Hispano-Romans, with marble used for decorative surfaces, basaltic lava and granite for areas under great pressure, and limestone and sandstone for pedestrian areas. Roman mosaics were made of small geometric stone tiles called tesserae arranged into patterns and figures, with early examples dating to the 2nd century BC. Roman sculpture was related to Greek sculpture, though some impressions of Greek sculpture may actually be based on Roman works.
