• MATERIALS
• MOSAIC
• SCULPTURE
• SOME EXAMPLES
MATERIALS 1.0
In the architecture the hispano romans use:
• Diferents tipes of stone
• Marble (marmol)
• Lime (cal)
• Sandstone (arenisca)
• Balsatic lava (lava balsatica)
• Granite (Granito)
MATERIALS
• STONE was clearly an important material for
construction and the Romans were skilled in quarrying it
and in using different types of stone in different types of
application.
• MARBLE would clearly be used to decorate surfaces.
• BASALTIC LAVA or GRANITE would be
employed for uses subjected to great pressure.
• LIME and SANDSTONE would be used for
pedestrian areas subjected to light wear.
MOSAIC
• Roman mosaics are constructed from geometrical
blocks called tesserae, placed together to create
the shapes of figures, motifs and patterns.
• The earliest examples of Roman mosaic date to
the late Republican period (2nd century BC) and
are housed in Delos, though tessellated
pavements were used in Europe from the late fifth
to early fourth centuries BC
SCULPTURE
• The study of Roman sculpture is complicated by
its relation to Greek sculpture.
• Some impressions of the nature of Greek
sculpture may in fact be based on Roman
pieces.
