Japan recovered rapidly after World War II, rising to the third largest industrial power. Samurai were ancient warriors who served lords in feudal Japan and were only permitted to carry swords. The most powerful samurai clans were the Minamito and Taira, who fought for control. In 1876, the emperor abolished the samurai class to modernize Japan based on Western models. Traditional Japanese art and culture were originally influenced by China but developed a unique style as influences were adapted to Japanese sensibilities over time.
