This document describes a strategy for teaching 4th grade students how to multiply 2-4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers using place value disks. The strategy involves decomposing the numbers, creating a place value chart, representing the problem with disks, and showing multiplication by arranging the disks and writing the numbers. Students can build their understanding of place value and regrouping by using the disks to model standard multiplication algorithms. While time-consuming, this approach helps students comprehend the steps in the standard written algorithm.
