This document discusses various methods for producing biochar, including pyrolysis in kilns or retorts. Pyrolysis involves heating biomass in a low-oxygen environment to produce biochar. Traditional methods like slash-and-burn leave most carbon in the atmosphere, while slash-and-char can retain up to 50% of carbon in the soil as biochar. Low-tech methods for biochar production discussed include metal drums, cans, sheets, furnaces, matting, piles, and earth or rice hull mounds. Clean Kiln Designs are also mentioned as are top light up draft methods and Peter Hirst's conservation burn technique.
