Decision criteria and analysis for hardware-based encryptionThales e-Security
Organizations trying to balance the risk of data breaches against the cost of pervasive encryption often balk at the trade-off. The use of hardware security modules (HSMs) in conjunction with applications that perform encryption improves the protection afforded to encryption keys and the encryption processes themselves, but cost considerations typically limit the scope of their deployment.
This slidedeck provides an explanation of criteria to help organizations decide which applications or data would benefit most from hardware-based encryption and key protection. The criteria are designed to make those decisions repeatable, consistent, and specific for any application, based on the organization’s sensitivity to cost, risk tolerance, and performance requirements. Real-world examples are also included!

With every Security & Privacy Breach survey pointing towards insiders as a potential threat and incidents leading to data loss and violation of the corporate information security policy, it is imperative that we answer the following questions:
Who are these insiders?
What activities do they carry out to breach security?
Why an insider seeks to cause harm?
How do we mitigate this threat?
Insider Threat Kill Chain: Detecting Human Indicators of CompromiseTripwire
Your organization’s greatest assets are also its greatest threat: People. Your greatest risk are those you trust. Last year, more than a third of data breaches were perpetrated by a malicious insider, such as an employee, contractor or trusted business partner.
On average, an attack by an insider is also more likely to cost the most, averaging $412K per incident.
The intentions of these insiders can be sabotage, fraud, intellectual property theft or espionage. However, in many cases, patterns of detectable behavior and network activity emerge that provide indicators of risk, assist in early detection and in speeding up response time of an actual incident.
In this webinar we discussed:
- how human resources, legal and IT can work together to help prevent insider threats before they become a problem.
- how to dentify risk indicators with employee attitudes and behavior and how it correlates to their patterns of activity on your network.
- how you can use log intelligence and security analytics to automate actions and alerts and rapid reporting and forensics.

Why virtual machine backups are different by David DavisVeeam Software
In this session we'll talk about hardware independence that's created by server virtualization. I'll cover the difference between image level versus file level backups. We'll touch on change block tracking, and then I'll cover some of the new features and possibilities that are made possible with virtualization backups, things like fast restore, replication, creating virtual labs and more. I'll cover why traditional backup software just doesn't understand virtualization, and then finally we'll end with what's the right tool for the job of backing up your virtual infrastructure. So with that, let's get started.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
