This chapter outlines the theoretical framework for academic writing assistance presented in the handbook. It defines academic writing as writing done for academic purposes and discusses two key approaches: the writing process approach, which views writing as an iterative process involving planning, drafting, revising, and feedback; and the genre-based approach, which teaches writing based on common text types (genres) such as descriptive, reflective, argumentative, and expository essays. The chapter also discusses the importance of formative assessment and feedback in the writing process to help students continuously improve.
