Global warming is occurring as evidenced by rising average global temperatures over the past century according to thermometer records, with most of the warming occurring in recent decades due to human activity like burning fossil fuels and deforestation. This temperature increase is causing effects like melting ice sheets and glaciers, rising sea levels that threaten coastal and island communities, and increased risk of extinction for many plant and animal species. While a small minority of scientists disagree on the extent or cause of the warming, the vast majority agree that climate change poses risks and is human-caused.
