Climate change is occurring due to human activity. The past few years have been the warmest on record and 2016 broke the record set in 2015. Most scientists agree that carbon emissions from human activities are trapping heat in the atmosphere and causing global warming. As the climate warms, ice is melting rapidly in the Arctic and increasing sea levels, wildlife habitats are being threatened, and weather is becoming more extreme with heat waves and coastal flooding increasing in frequency and severity. While the effects of climate change are already apparent, international agreements like the Paris Agreement aim to limit future warming through reductions in fossil fuel use and a switch to renewable energy sources.
