2. The INE
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) is an autonomous organism, attached to
the Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Government of Spain. Its main task is
the elaborate public statistics, which are official studies on the status and
evolution of some branches or disciplines of Geography, like the population,
economy and society of Spain.

3. In addition to producing statistics, INE, is the coordinator of official statistics
carried out in Spain through the different public administrations, because you
have to take into account, that it is not the only organism that makes official
statistics (for example: each Ministry has a department of statistics).
Official statistics are collected in the called National Statistical Plan (PEN),
which the same INE elaborates, in collaboration with the rest of the statistics
producing institutions.
4. Activities of the INE are perhaps less well known, but have great significance:
- At international level it participates in Statistical Forums and working groups of the
various and contributes to the construction of the official statistics of the
European Union.
- It performs important functions of coordination of the municipal registers (lists of
inhabitants) of councils and is responsible for the formation of the Electoral
Census, used in all election processes.
5. INE employs about 4.000 people:
- About 700 are technical Officials of the State.
- Many are surveyors and inspectors of surveys (specialists in field work
collecting information through questionnaires to companies and
households)
- They are distributed between the central services and the 52 provincial
offices (which are responsible for the collection of information and deal
with queries of the informants and the public in general).
6. Brief history
The INE is created in 1945, although official statistics began to be
carried out in Spain since 1856, with the creation of the
Commission of Statistics of the Kingdom.
At the end of 1964, the INE installed the first computer. In the next
four years, is accomplished the computer to operate at full capacity
processing statistics.
On May 9, 1989 is promulgating the Law of the Public Statistical
Function that gives it as an autonomous organism empowering
statistical technologies, coordination with the CCAA, the
development of the National Statistical Plan and relations with the
EU statistics.
The demand for statistical information has continued to grow and
new fields of research have opened such as science and technology,
environment and sustainable development indicators.
Besides like our country is a member of the EU, means to satisfy
with their demands for information, adapt, a permanent training
and the incorporation of experts and new resources.
7. Provincial organization
INE has a strong presence throughout the national territory, in order to
facilitate the collection of information for statistics and surveys he performs.
For this reason, you'll find a Delegation of the INE in your province. And
Central Services Office, a press office, attending to journalists and the media.
It is on the Paseo de la Castellana - Madrid. It receives visits by students from
ESO and institutes, in all its branches.
8. The Statistical information
Themselves, the statistics are just numbers. However, its presence in many areas of our
lives is very common. We can listen statistical data on sports news, economic reports...
An effective presentation of data, requires a combination of various elements: text,
tables, graphics, maps... to capture the reader's attention.
One of the best techniques to make the data understandable, are the images, charts or
maps, presented in different ways: from simple bar charts to diagrams, charts more
complex, tables, thematic maps and population pyramids.

In the website of the INE the largest database statistics of Spain are collected, free
millions of data, current and historical, besides of books, videos, games, curiosities...
about demography, economy, rates, index, politics, health, education, technology,
unemployment, employment...

- The total population of men and women of a municipality/province in a certain year.
- The number of births by age of mother by autonomous communities, provinces,
municipalities.
- Censuses of population and housing by province, community, or nation.
10. We can also access to the statistical information provided by: Ministries,
the Bank of Spain, the EU, rest of Europe and the world. Data, all of
them very useful for work in various disciplines:
- Marketing: analyzing markets and consumer behavior.
- Companies: sectors of production, industry, agriculture, fishing, animal
husbandry. Lists and data of all of them.
- Sociology: conduct of each and every one of the social sectors, families,
households and population.
- IPC and living conditions: that is an economic index which valued the
prices of all the set of goods and services, estimated by «household
expenditure survey»
11. - Environment: collection and treatment of urban waste, emissions to the
atmosphere, water treatment...
- Demography: population figures, most frequent baby names in Spain
- Labour market: unemployment, employment and activity rates
- Culture, health: causes of death in Spain, book publishing activity,
registered health professionals.
- TIC (Information and Communication technologies): They are tools and
media that expose, process and store information (computers, software
and networks, necessary to convert it, store it, manage it, transmit it,
and find it).
- Tourism: Statistics and comparatives of hotels, camping, rural
apartments, number of travelers ...
12. Curiosities
