This document reports on a study of the nonlinear optical properties of gold quantum clusters Au15 and Au25. Key findings include:
1) Au15 clusters have a remarkably large two-photon absorption cross-section of 65,700 GM at 780 nm, compared to 4,427 GM for Au25.
2) The first hyperpolarizability of Au15 clusters is 509 × 10-30 esu, larger than Au25 clusters at 128 × 10-30 esu, despite Au15 having fewer gold atoms.
3) Both the two-photon absorption cross-section and first hyperpolarizability per atom of Au15 and Au25 are over two orders of magnitude larger than for larger gold

In this work, a colloidal suspension aqueous solution of Au/Ag composite nanoparticles by pulsed laser ablation method was obtained. Q-switched Nd:YAG, λ=1064nm, 532nm10 ns pulse duration and E=100- 900 mJ and by using pure Ag and Au metal plates immersed in pure water. The optical extinction spectra have been obtained in the Plasmon resonance region. The results are supported by X-ray data and transmission electron microscopy. UV-VIS absorption spectra of produced solution show a sharp peak around 400 nm, 525nm indicating the produced Ag and Au nanoparticles respectively with a narrow size ranging from (5 to 45) nm for Ag NPs, (8-55)nm for Au NPs and (10-170)nm for Au/Ag composite NPs with almost spherical shape Xray data indicate the fcc (face-centered cubic) structure.This work presents the effect of number of pulses on the properties of the prepared Au, Ag and Au-Ag alloy NPs, also included a study of the biomedical effects of Au, Ag, Au-Ag alloy NPs on the activity of Alkaline Phosphatase enzyme in human blood.

EMRS 2018 Replacing rare earth ions in LEDs (?)Philippe Smet
Two decades after the development of the blue light-emitting diode (LED), LEDs have quickly established themselves as the lighting technology of the future. The high efficiency, spectral tunability, lack of toxic compounds and a small footprint makes them far more attractive than other lighting technologies. The high efficiency, now well exceeding 100 lum/W in commercial products, has still the margin to double, promising a strong reduction in electricity consumption.
White LEDs are commonly based on a blue LED, combined with luminescent materials, or phosphors, which convert part of the blue light to longer wavelengths, the mixture providing white light. Besides the workhorse Y3Al5O12:Ce (YAG:Ce, yielding yellow emission), europium doped phosphors are used to provide e.g. the red emission required for warm-white LEDs.
Six main requirements for LED phosphors are discussed and used to explain the discrepancy between the high number of compositions described in literature and the handful of actually used compounds, being almost uniquely based on rare earth ions as luminescent center [1]. Alternative materials avoiding the use of rare earth ions are discussed, including Mn4+ doped fluorides phosphors (e.g. K2SiF6:Mn4+ [2]) and quantum dots. Finally, the impact of phosphor geometries on phosphor use, including remote phosphor applications, are discussed.

Graphene synthesis: Rate and Mechanistic Investigation of Eu(OTf)2-Mediated R...Tufan Ghosh
We describe a fast, efficient, and mild approach to prepare chemically reduced graphene oxide (rGO) at room temperature using divalent europium triflate {Eu(OTf)2}. The characterization of solution-processable reduced graphene oxide has been carried out by various spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV–visible absorption, and Raman), microscopic (TEM and AFM), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Kinetic study indicates that the bimolecular rate constants for the reduction of graphene oxide are 13.7 ± 0.7 and 5.3 ± 0.1 M–1 s–1 in tetrahydrofuran (THF)–water and acetonitrile (ACN)–water mixtures, respectively. The reduction rate constants are two orders of magnitude higher compared to the values obtained in the case of commonly used reducing agents such as the hydrazine derivative, sodium borohydride, and a glucose–ammonia mixture. The present work introduces a feasible reduction process for preparing reduced graphene oxide at ambient conditions, which is important for bulk production of GO. More importantly, the study explores the possibilities of utilizing the unique chemistry of divalent lanthanide complexes for chemical modifications of graphene oxide.

ABSTRACT: A concept of a compact device for analyzing key isotopic composition in surface materials without sample preparation is presented. This design is based on an advanced modification of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). First, we developed Laser Ablation Molecular Isotopic Spectrometry (LAMIS) that involves measuring isotope-resolved molecular emission, which exhibits significantly larger isotopic spectral shifts than those in atomic transitions. Second, we used laser ablation to vaporize the sample materials into a plume in which absorption spectra can be measured using a tunable diode laser. The intrinsically high spectral resolution of the diode lasers facilitates measurements of isotopic ratios. The absorption sensitivity can be boosted using cavity enhanced spectroscopy. Temporal behavior of species in a laser ablation plasma from solid samples with various isotopic composition was studied. Detection of key isotopes associated with signs of life (carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen) as well as strontium and boron in laser ablation plume was demonstrated; boron isotopes were quantified. Isotope-resolved spectra of many other molecular species were simulated. The experimental results demonstrate sensitivity to 86 Sr, 87 Sr, and 88 Sr with spectrally resolved measurements for each of them. It is possible to measure strontium isotopes in rocks on Mars for radiogenic age determination. Requirements for spectral resolution of the optical measurement system can be significantly relaxed when the isotopic abundance ratio is determined using chemometric analysis of spectra.

Abstract
The Σ beam asymmetry in the photoproduction of negative pions from quasi-free neutrons in a deuterium target was measured at Graal in the energy interval 700 - 1500 MeV and a wide angular range, using polarized and tagged photons. The results are compared with recent partial wave analyses.

Abstract
The double polarization (beam-recoil) observables Ox and Oz have been measured for the reac- tion γp → K+Λ from threshold production to E ∼ 1500MeV. The data were obtained with the linearly polarized beam of the GRAAL facility. Values for the target asymmetry T could also be extracted despite the use of an unpolarized target. Analyses of our results by two isobar models tend to confirm the necessity to include new or poorly known resonances in the 1900MeV mass region.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) was achieved by a simple green procedure using Tinospora Cordifolia leaf extract as stabilizer/reducing agents. Ag-NPs in the size range of 2–19 nm is obtained by the treatment of aqueous silver ions with leaf extracts of Tinospora Cordifolia. This eco-friendly approach is simple, amenable for large scale commercial production and technical applications. Further, photoluminiscence studies of these Ag-NPs were recorded & suggested that the present particles were suitable for fluorescence emitting probes. These red emitting Ag-NPs exhibited distinct fluorescence properties (both emission and stokeshift).

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectroscopy is a label-free chemical and biological molec-
ular sensing technique whose sensitivity depends upon development of nanostructured transducers.
Herein, we report an electrodeposition method for fabricating nanostructured gold films (NGFs) that
can be used as transducers in LSPR spectroscopy. The NGF was prepared by electrodepositing gold from
potassium dicyanoaurate solution onto a flat gold surface using two sequential controlled potential steps.
Imaging by scanning electron microscopy reveals a morphology consisting of randomly configured block-
like nanostructures. The bulk refractive index sensitivity of the prepared NGF is 100 ± 2 nm RIU�1 and the
initial peak in the reflectance spectrum is at 518 ± 1 nm under N2(g). The figure of merit is 1.7. In addition,
we have studied the interaction between carbohydrate (mannose) and lectin (Concanavalin A) on the
NGF surface using LSPR spectroscopy by measuring the interaction of 8-mercaptooctyl-a-D-mannopyran-
oside (aMan-C8-SH) with Concanavalin A by first immobilizing aMan-C8-SH in mixed SAMs with 3,6-
dioxa-8-mercaptooctanol (TEG-SH) on the NGF surface. The interaction of Con A with the mixed SAMs
is confirmed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Finally, the NGF surface was regenerated
to its original sensitivity by removing the SAM and the bound biomolecules. The results from these exper-
iments contribute toward the development of inexpensive LSPR based sensors that could be useful for
studying glycan–protein interactions and other bioanalytical purposes.

For the comparison transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were made through JCPDS. Abstract
The Σ beam asymmetry in the photoproduction of neutral pions from quasi-free nucleons in a deuteron target was measured for the first time between 0.60 and 1.50GeV, with the GRAAL polarized and tagged photon beam. The asymmetry values from the quasi-free proton were found equal to the ones extracted from a pure proton target. The asymmetries from quasi-free proton and quasi-free neutron were found equal up to 0.82GeV and substantially different at higher energies. The results are compared with recent partial-wave analyses.

Gamma ray irradiation technique is the powerful technique to modify the dielectric and electro-optical properties of liquid crystals. It p refers than any other modification technique because no catalysts or additives are required to initiate the reaction. The present paper reports a comparative study of IR spectrum for both irradiated and unirradiated EBHA NLC. The dielectric spectrum and ionic conductivity is also evaluated and well explained in this paper. In addition to this, we have al so suggested the concept of the peak data information graph for better understanding of IR spectrum.

Abstract
Beam asymmetry and differential cross section for the reaction gamma+p->eta+p were measured from production threshold to 1500 MeV photon laboratory energy. The two dominant neutral decay modes of the eta meson, eta->2g and eta->3pi0, were analyzed. The full set of measurements is in good agreement with previously published results. Our data were compared with three models. They all fit satisfactorily the results but their respective resonance contributions are quite different. The possible photoexcitation of a narrow state N(1670) was investigated and no evidence was found.
