This movie trailer was filmed in a variety of
locations such as, America (Ohio, NYC), Cuba
and Iceland. In addition to the filming subject,
the camerawork was one of the aspects that
intrigued me the most as a member of the
audience, the angles clearly showed the
characters emotions which reels you in and
makes you feel more connected to the movie,
without seeing the whole of it. From seeing
some major scenes in the trailer, without it
giving to much away, I collected a range of
emotions which were professionally portrayed
throughout the scenes being; tragedy; anger;
hatred; envy and a deeper passion for
protecting family. These are certain
components that I want to bring forward into
my work. Furthermore, there was a particular
scene which grabbed my attention
immediately and it was all because of the
editors, they had filmed the cast shifting their
gears on beat to the music and the same
principle applies for when this huge sub tank
emerges from beneath the ice and for
someone like me who doesn’t have a huge
attention span made me want to keep
watching to see more. Lastly, there is many
features that would appeal to the audience,
but one characteristic that stands out the most
is the editors use of music and the way they
know what kind of songs to use for different
scenes and to represent characters emotions
to completely captivate their viewers. Also, a
small technique they use which makes a huge
impact, is by including short pauses to build
tension/suspense or to form intense feelings
amongst their fanbase.

Immediately, emotive instrumental music is
played at the beginning of the trailer
overlapping a series of muted historic battles,
with an elderly gentleman speaking of victory
and strength which represents the film as a
whole. Additionally, by having emotive music at
the start it allows their targeted audience to
make an instant connection and understand
what the male narrator is saying, on a deeper
level. Similarly, to the pervious trailer I watched,
the editors included camera angles which show
the characters up close, for example the girl who
is tired and distraught and because of the way it
has been filmed and edited, you are able to see
her emotions in her face, but also hear it in her
voice. Moreover, there is a variety of songs
included to se the tone/mood of each major
scene within the trailer and towards the end of
the trailer the clips become quicker and sync
with the music, to then lead up to a slight pause
and release a deep mellow drop, which then
proceeds to introduce another scene with
emotive talking. Lastly, the editors decided to
place the title and date at the end of the trailer
to keep their viewers entertained and to keep on
top of trends at that time.

The next two products I have chosen to analyse
are not trailers but more of Cinematic B-Rolls, so I
am able to see and understand the techniques
used in order to create the best version of my
own film trailer. This video is introduced by having
a realistic fire scene at the beginning along with
an intense bass beat, which then instantly
switches to a clip where the camera is showing a
garage door opening, revealing a sleek black
sports car shining its headlights, this allows the
audience to easily interpret what exactly the
video is going to be about. Throughout the whole
video, there is a range of smooth transitions and
crossfades which give the video a very futuristic
outlook and another aspect which grasped my
attention was the way the editors edited the
video so that a few exhaust sounds have priority
over the background music. In addition to this,
there is one clip when the camera was focused on
a speedometer of a car and watching the speed
rapidly increase and when it reached the max, a
whole different scene is introduced showing a
variety of sports cars, whilst upping the bass in
the background. Moreover, the whole video was
filmed in Ottawa, Canada at night-time to emit
this dangerous and exhilarating ambience. Also,
the diversity in angles enables their targeted
audience to be entertained to the very last
minute.

Straightaway, there is this cosmic amount of
positivity and pure happiness which
radiates onto the viewers and picks up their
mood which is a brilliant way to gain a large
following and take onboard any optimistic
criticism. The opening shot contains a still
clip of a sunrise peering over the sea, with
decking reaching out and a small bird
flapping it’s wings and chirping which the
editor made sure was the focus, by making
those bird sounds overlap the background
music. He then proceeds to film a slow pan
up a palm tree and a zoomed in still shot of
a tropical parrot, showing all it’s beautiful
colours and again allowing the squark to be
the main feature of that clip. This tells the
audience that he is somewhere on exotic
and most probably on vacation.
Furthermore, as a member of the audience I
can imply that the gentleman is on holiday
because he filmed a collection of places he
had explored and put them all together, one
after the other, keeping the transitions
smooth. Lastly, I was drawn to this video
because it was all filmed on a phone, which
is exactly what I plan to do myself and
found the video useful for understanding
more about the rules/tips and ticks of
filming a cinematic video on a phone and I
will bring these expertise forward with me
in this project.

When looking at this film poster, the
attention is immediately drawn into the
centre where Denzel is standing and the
majority of his body has been faded, to show
this action-packed scene from the movie.
The editors have made sure to keep the
background a simple colour and keep the
text to a minimum, so the main feature
doesn’t loose any attention. Additionally, the
editors have made sure that the head is in
full opacity along with the gun he is holding,
which represents this idea of the film being
about guns, fighting, danger and death.
Secondly, there has been a signature quote
included on the front cover which states,
‘There will be no consequences’, that tells
their targeted audience a lot about what to
expect when watching the film. Lastly, this
would make viewers want to see the film
because of the uniqueness and originality of
the way the poster has been put together.
Existing Product
The editors and cameramen took a different
approach to this poster and decided to turn
the image and all of the text to an 80-
degree angle (left) to make it more
appealing to their targeted audience's eye.
In addition to this, there are four different
sports cars on the front to represent each
character alongside having them on the
cover, also the helicopter in the sky shows
that the film isn’t just about cars but about
action and surviving. Another element that
reveals part of the storyline for the film, is
how serious each character's facial
expressions is and the sky/actors. Finally,
this will make certain viewers want to watch
it because just by cooking at the poster it is
an insight to the film.
Existing Product
Instantly, there is a visible difference between this poster and the others which is the fact
that it is landscape. The editors have made sure to keep the colour scheme dark but
include a pop of red which also links with the blood on the characters face, which
represents danger, envy and death, but on the other hand, the blood suggests that John
Wick is a powerful man and can handle himself but judging by the erray of 16 different
guns around his head does not mean that it isn’t easy. Secondly, around the guns there is
infinite darkness, which implies that he has been on the run/in danger forever. In
conclusion to this, appropriate audience members will find this appealing because of the
simplistic yet detailed style.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– A few common features that appear throughout my researched
products are this idea of having an action-packed trailer, whilst making
sure that any characters involved clearly show their emotions through
their facial expressions/body language.
– Also, I collected products that share the same editing skills, down to
the transitions and music.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your own
production work?
• The aspects that I will include in my own work is the skills and knowledge I
have learnt about how to film on a mobile phone and make it look
professional and use the right kind of music to fit different scenes to get
the suitable emotions across to my targeted audience.

• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
I created this survey to gather up
information about my viewers
preferences to make my products
suitable as possible. This says that
the majority of my audience is
under the age of 18 which fits my
initial plan ideas for my targeted
audience, it also means that my
products will have to be suited to
as more younger age group. I
managed to gather 17 responses
for this question, which allows me
to know more info about how my
final pieces should be in order to
attract a good percentage of my
audience eyes. By overlooking this
question my product will appeal to
my viewers by using a selection of
music and imagery, which is known
more within the younger
generation.

• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
Now looking at this survey, there
is a visible difference of female
and male responses with female
being at 2 and male at 15.
Additionally, this implies that my
primary audience is Males –
under the age of 18 and that I
can apply this knowledge to my
work by incorporating more
characteristics that are more
appropriate for men. Moreover,
my products will suit males
more because there will be
scenes to do with cars, crashes,
fighting etc, which will be more
entertaining and eye catching to
them.
Primary Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
By examining the results for
question three, the majority of
my audience prefer quick
transitions which sync with the
music, but disregarding the most
voted response, initial sound
and gradual increase both drew
at having four votes each, so
these results all together gives
me a varied outcome when it
comes down to my audience’s
partialities. Likewise, by looking
at these survey results, I know
that my products will appeal to
them because I will apply the
knowledge of knowing that
quick transitions, initial sound
and gradual increase, is what
intrigues my viewers the most
and if I incorporate these facts, I
will develop the best versions of
my pieces that I can make.

• How will your product appeal to this audience:
Overall, the results for this question tell me that my targeted audience thinks along
the same lines when it comes down to talking about what their least favourite
aspect is about a film trailer. Responses which link to what I am saying are, too
much text, longer than two minutes, shows too much of the plot, music that
doesn’t fit the trailer, too much speaking and the fact that some trailers don’t give
enough information. Having a variety of answers means that I can take the
feedback and utilize it in my work, so that it isn’t just suitable for one set of people
but for multiple.

• How will your product appeal to this audience:
For this question I decided to give
my audience a choice of four
options plus ‘other’, the options
were YouTube, Netflix, Instagram
IGTV and Television, the reason as
to why I chose to give these as
preferneces was because these
platforms are the most
popular/used at the moment and I
knew by including them, that this
question would be valuable to my
research because by knowing the
most chosen platform which is
YouTube at 12 votes, it would be
the best place to upload my final
trailer. Furthermore, my product
will appeal to my audience
because it will be easily accessible
on YouTube which is where the
most of my viewers watch trailers.

• How will your product appeal to this audience:
When it came down to asking my audience what genre of music, they prefer to have in
the background of an action trailer, I got a lot of feedback talking about diverse kinds of
music. However, a running theme which I spotted amongst the answers, was this idea of
lower pitched music with a real ‘WOW’ factor kind of bass and old school music such as
the Artic Monkey’s which made an appearance more than once, which suggests that I
should consolidate those three main statistics within my final fabrications to draw in the
applicable type of viewers. Additionally, knowing that my survey stated that the bulk of
my audience members are male, means that I can use music which is suited more to an
action trailer alongside taking men’s perspectives into consideration when it comes
down to forming the right number of songs to use within my media piece.

Now, this question was used for me to
understand and take into account
what percent’s of my audience listen
with headphones or out loud and they
both came close to each other, just by
the difference of 1 vote, the option
‘out loud’ won by 9 and ‘headphones’
came out with 8 votes, but because
both choices were so close I have
decided that when editing my video I
will make sure that the audio doesn’t
peak so whoever wears headphones
or listens to it out loud, will get the full
experience and to do this I have to
keep an eye on the audio in Premiere
Pro and make sure it doesn’t hit red.
Primary Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
The total responses for
this question was 14
because 3 respondents
decided to skip it.
However, the most voted
option was style at a total
of 6, which means that in
order to persuade my
audience to watch my
trailer, I will have to reel
them in by the style of my
film poster and make sure
that it relates to my video,
so that my viewers are
not immediately thrown
off.
Primary Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
Details to a minimum
was voted the most,
which links back to the
knowledge about my
audience because I
know that not having
lots of information or
making sure to not
reveal much about the
plot is what my
audience prefers, so not
having a lot of
information on the film
poster works well in the
whole scheme of things.
Also, by having little
detail on the film poster,
means that they will be
drawn in by
iconography.
Primary Audience research
• Observation:
• What this says about my audience:
• How will your product appeal to this audience:
Finally, the last question was
used to get an idea on what
kind of imagery my targeted
audience favour and as you
can see it was ‘Realistic’. I
wanted to ask this question
because there wouldn’t be
any point in creating a film
poster which sketched
imagery because that
doesn’t interest the right
group of viewers, therefore I
will entertain the idea of
realistic designs. Lastly, my
film poster will allure my
viewership because of the
realistic/detailed style it will
have, whilst keeping details
to a reduced amount.

Do’s Explain
Video Length One of the defining features of the success of you video.
Reasonable length. Convey message. Short video may fail
to encompass the important points you are trying to get
across through your video.
Central message/ Call to action Place your call to action at the end of your video so
audience remembers your product.
Knowing what you want out of your video Having a clear-cut idea or scope is imperative for your
video to have a high-preformance. Tool to generate leads,
create brand visibility or to increase it’s reach. Specific
goal helps in the efficient production.
Knowing and winning your audience Target is key, i.e demographic and psychographic is
instrumental in video production. Pay attention towards
the emotion of the respective audience.
Plan distribution Right platform at the right time, knowing your targeted
audience makes it easier for when you need to expose
them to your video is pivotal success.
Avoid information overload Less is more, keeps audience attention in place and

• (Music)
I decided to experiment with some different music websites and see where I could
find the most applicable and free music for my film trailer and so I tried a website
called ‘Artist’ which offers a variety of music options, from genres, moods and
styles. Because I knew I was going to create a small nature trailer, I filtered the
search with nature so that the most popular and varied songs appeared and after
listening to a few, I went with ‘ Revelations’ by Tristan Barton because as soon as I
listened to it I knew that it would fit the vibe that I wanted to have throughout my
whole video. In addition to this, I selected this one because it is a calm song but
still adds the slight bit of mystery and danger and made the whole trailer seem
mystical. Once I had chosen the song, I downloaded into my one drive, so that I
could easily edit into my trailer on Premiere Pro.
Practical Research
Practical Research
• (importing files)
Once I had downloaded the song and imported all the necessary
files, I then began to put them all together in a certain order, so that
each clip built up to a major clip where the main beat of the song is
introduced, to make the short video more cinematic and have more
of an impact on my audience. Throughout the process I made sure
that each clip syncs with the music, which makes it seemingly smooth
and more entertaining to keep the audiences focus in check. I edited
the video using Premiere Pro.
Practical Research
Practical Research
• (colour editing)
Throughout the process of putting all the clips together, I realized that the colours
of the scenery were not to the standard that I wanted them to be, to be able to give
off that cinematic look, so I used a technique called ‘Colourgradeing’, which allowed
me to alter every aspect of the colours, such as, the saturation, tint, hue etc.
Additionally a tool, which I newly discovered was something called ‘Curve’, which
enables you to darken or lighten the imagery, which came in handy because I
wanted the forest imagery to appear dark and empty, to consume my audience
members. Furthermore, I did this throughout the whole video, editing the
saturation and making certain aspects lighter or darker. In addition to this a
particular detail which I carried out throughout this fabrication was making the
green colours highly saturated so that they contrasted with the darker sky/trees.
Practical Research
Practical Research
• (added in effects)
Lastly, during the development of my short nature trailer, I noticed that a
few clips were not as smooth as I had hoped, so to solve this I used an
effect which is called ‘Warp Stabilizer’, which can be applied to clips to
make them smoother and reduce/get rid of any unstableness which
occurred whilst filming. Additionally, towards the end of the scenes and the
music, I added in a faded affect so that when the video ends the music
smoothly fades out with it, it just gives it more of a professional look, which
is what I aim for when creating my products.
Practical Research
• Bass music grasped my attention
immediately
• Slow-mo’s of soap/suds' dripping
from the front of the car
• Music switches as the car is being
hosed down to reveal the freshly
washed beauty of the vehicle.
• Smooth, non complicated
transitions
• A slumber type off effect is placed
across all imagery to make the
video seem more cinematic
• Towards end, the music quickens
along with the transitions and
speed of individual clips
• Car is being polished and shot up
close to capture the finer details, to
really show off the car.
Practical Research
• Intense music- many different songs
are [played to fit the imagery,
transitions, cars and style.
• Clearly a huge car show, which
makes for the perfect location to
record a car B-Roll, perfect footage
source.
• Music in-sync with transitions
• Colour grading is a main aspect
throughout the whole video
because each clip has been edited
so that when put tighter, it makes
the perfect cinematic video.
• Mix of slow-mo and quick
transitions/duration of recordings
• Varied sound effects (at the
beginning where there is a few bits
of text and is introduced with a
sound, similar too a ‘woosh’)
• Enhanced exhaust sounds to fit the
theme of the product
• A wide range of camera angles to
form diversity
Practical Research
• Instantly intrigued by the sound effects
at the beginning (a fast car moving
through a tunnel)
• Dimitri is the producer of the video and
edited in his name to the video, by
making it look like a sign on the highway
• Peter McKinnon was his inspiration to
create a Mercedes-Benz inspired B-Roll
• Music switches to something more
casual and imagery becomes a lot lighter
to give off a more positive mood
• After showing the driver get ready, it
then shows him driving and including
details about the car
• A technique which the editor used was a
countdown from 10 which showed 10
different parts to the car, to then pause
and when the driver presses the
dynamic button it quickly transitions
from daytime to the evening, just like
something you would witness in a VR
game.

• (music experiment)
To get more of an idea on how to produce the right music for my film
trailer, I decided to experiment with the software called ‘ Garageband’
which allows you to choose beats, rhythms and instruments from a wide
range of choices. To begin with, I selected an electoral instrument called
‘beat machine’ and you can either use a small piano keyboard or a
selected number of keys on a keyboard, but I didn’t have access to a one-
handed piano, so I used what I already had, and it turned out pretty well
considering I had never used the software so intricately before. Once I
had created my bass line, I then moved onto producing two other
rhythms using the beat machine again and the ‘Agile synth bass’. In
addition to this, it was difficult to work it at first but then I got the hang
of it and really learnt my way around using an everyday keyboard to
produce a short piece of music. Lastly, when I had finished, I exported the
piece as a mp3 so that I could insert it into this PowerPoint and to make it
easier to find/listen too.

  • 2. Existing Product This movie trailer was filmed in a variety of locations such as, America (Ohio, NYC), Cuba and Iceland. In addition to the filming subject, the camerawork was one of the aspects that intrigued me the most as a member of the audience, the angles clearly showed the characters emotions which reels you in and makes you feel more connected to the movie, without seeing the whole of it. From seeing some major scenes in the trailer, without it giving to much away, I collected a range of emotions which were professionally portrayed throughout the scenes being; tragedy; anger; hatred; envy and a deeper passion for protecting family. These are certain components that I want to bring forward into my work. Furthermore, there was a particular scene which grabbed my attention immediately and it was all because of the editors, they had filmed the cast shifting their gears on beat to the music and the same principle applies for when this huge sub tank emerges from beneath the ice and for someone like me who doesn’t have a huge attention span made me want to keep watching to see more. Lastly, there is many features that would appeal to the audience, but one characteristic that stands out the most is the editors use of music and the way they know what kind of songs to use for different scenes and to represent characters emotions to completely captivate their viewers. Also, a small technique they use which makes a huge impact, is by including short pauses to build tension/suspense or to form intense feelings amongst their fanbase. Fast and Furious 8
  • 3. Existing Product Immediately, emotive instrumental music is played at the beginning of the trailer overlapping a series of muted historic battles, with an elderly gentleman speaking of victory and strength which represents the film as a whole. Additionally, by having emotive music at the start it allows their targeted audience to make an instant connection and understand what the male narrator is saying, on a deeper level. Similarly, to the pervious trailer I watched, the editors included camera angles which show the characters up close, for example the girl who is tired and distraught and because of the way it has been filmed and edited, you are able to see her emotions in her face, but also hear it in her voice. Moreover, there is a variety of songs included to se the tone/mood of each major scene within the trailer and towards the end of the trailer the clips become quicker and sync with the music, to then lead up to a slight pause and release a deep mellow drop, which then proceeds to introduce another scene with emotive talking. Lastly, the editors decided to place the title and date at the end of the trailer to keep their viewers entertained and to keep on top of trends at that time. Transformers- The Last Knight
  • 4. Existing Product The next two products I have chosen to analyse are not trailers but more of Cinematic B-Rolls, so I am able to see and understand the techniques used in order to create the best version of my own film trailer. This video is introduced by having a realistic fire scene at the beginning along with an intense bass beat, which then instantly switches to a clip where the camera is showing a garage door opening, revealing a sleek black sports car shining its headlights, this allows the audience to easily interpret what exactly the video is going to be about. Throughout the whole video, there is a range of smooth transitions and crossfades which give the video a very futuristic outlook and another aspect which grasped my attention was the way the editors edited the video so that a few exhaust sounds have priority over the background music. In addition to this, there is one clip when the camera was focused on a speedometer of a car and watching the speed rapidly increase and when it reached the max, a whole different scene is introduced showing a variety of sports cars, whilst upping the bass in the background. Moreover, the whole video was filmed in Ottawa, Canada at night-time to emit this dangerous and exhilarating ambience. Also, the diversity in angles enables their targeted audience to be entertained to the very last minute. Cinematic Car Music Video
  • 5. Existing Product Straightaway, there is this cosmic amount of positivity and pure happiness which radiates onto the viewers and picks up their mood which is a brilliant way to gain a large following and take onboard any optimistic criticism. The opening shot contains a still clip of a sunrise peering over the sea, with decking reaching out and a small bird flapping it’s wings and chirping which the editor made sure was the focus, by making those bird sounds overlap the background music. He then proceeds to film a slow pan up a palm tree and a zoomed in still shot of a tropical parrot, showing all it’s beautiful colours and again allowing the squark to be the main feature of that clip. This tells the audience that he is somewhere on exotic and most probably on vacation. Furthermore, as a member of the audience I can imply that the gentleman is on holiday because he filmed a collection of places he had explored and put them all together, one after the other, keeping the transitions smooth. Lastly, I was drawn to this video because it was all filmed on a phone, which is exactly what I plan to do myself and found the video useful for understanding more about the rules/tips and ticks of filming a cinematic video on a phone and I will bring these expertise forward with me in this project. Pro Cinematic 4K Footage using a mobile
  • 6. Existing Product When looking at this film poster, the attention is immediately drawn into the centre where Denzel is standing and the majority of his body has been faded, to show this action-packed scene from the movie. The editors have made sure to keep the background a simple colour and keep the text to a minimum, so the main feature doesn’t loose any attention. Additionally, the editors have made sure that the head is in full opacity along with the gun he is holding, which represents this idea of the film being about guns, fighting, danger and death. Secondly, there has been a signature quote included on the front cover which states, ‘There will be no consequences’, that tells their targeted audience a lot about what to expect when watching the film. Lastly, this would make viewers want to see the film because of the uniqueness and originality of the way the poster has been put together.
  • 7. Existing Product The editors and cameramen took a different approach to this poster and decided to turn the image and all of the text to an 80- degree angle (left) to make it more appealing to their targeted audience's eye. In addition to this, there are four different sports cars on the front to represent each character alongside having them on the cover, also the helicopter in the sky shows that the film isn’t just about cars but about action and surviving. Another element that reveals part of the storyline for the film, is how serious each character's facial expressions is and the sky/actors. Finally, this will make certain viewers want to watch it because just by cooking at the poster it is an insight to the film.
  • 8. Existing Product Instantly, there is a visible difference between this poster and the others which is the fact that it is landscape. The editors have made sure to keep the colour scheme dark but include a pop of red which also links with the blood on the characters face, which represents danger, envy and death, but on the other hand, the blood suggests that John Wick is a powerful man and can handle himself but judging by the erray of 16 different guns around his head does not mean that it isn’t easy. Secondly, around the guns there is infinite darkness, which implies that he has been on the run/in danger forever. In conclusion to this, appropriate audience members will find this appealing because of the simplistic yet detailed style.
  • 9. Research Analysis • What common features do the researched products have? – A few common features that appear throughout my researched products are this idea of having an action-packed trailer, whilst making sure that any characters involved clearly show their emotions through their facial expressions/body language. – Also, I collected products that share the same editing skills, down to the transitions and music. • What aspects of the research will you include within your own production work? • The aspects that I will include in my own work is the skills and knowledge I have learnt about how to film on a mobile phone and make it look professional and use the right kind of music to fit different scenes to get the suitable emotions across to my targeted audience.
  • 11. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: I created this survey to gather up information about my viewers preferences to make my products suitable as possible. This says that the majority of my audience is under the age of 18 which fits my initial plan ideas for my targeted audience, it also means that my products will have to be suited to as more younger age group. I managed to gather 17 responses for this question, which allows me to know more info about how my final pieces should be in order to attract a good percentage of my audience eyes. By overlooking this question my product will appeal to my viewers by using a selection of music and imagery, which is known more within the younger generation.
  • 12. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: Now looking at this survey, there is a visible difference of female and male responses with female being at 2 and male at 15. Additionally, this implies that my primary audience is Males – under the age of 18 and that I can apply this knowledge to my work by incorporating more characteristics that are more appropriate for men. Moreover, my products will suit males more because there will be scenes to do with cars, crashes, fighting etc, which will be more entertaining and eye catching to them.
  • 13. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: By examining the results for question three, the majority of my audience prefer quick transitions which sync with the music, but disregarding the most voted response, initial sound and gradual increase both drew at having four votes each, so these results all together gives me a varied outcome when it comes down to my audience’s partialities. Likewise, by looking at these survey results, I know that my products will appeal to them because I will apply the knowledge of knowing that quick transitions, initial sound and gradual increase, is what intrigues my viewers the most and if I incorporate these facts, I will develop the best versions of my pieces that I can make.
  • 14. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience:
  • 15. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: Overall, the results for this question tell me that my targeted audience thinks along the same lines when it comes down to talking about what their least favourite aspect is about a film trailer. Responses which link to what I am saying are, too much text, longer than two minutes, shows too much of the plot, music that doesn’t fit the trailer, too much speaking and the fact that some trailers don’t give enough information. Having a variety of answers means that I can take the feedback and utilize it in my work, so that it isn’t just suitable for one set of people but for multiple.
  • 16. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: For this question I decided to give my audience a choice of four options plus ‘other’, the options were YouTube, Netflix, Instagram IGTV and Television, the reason as to why I chose to give these as preferneces was because these platforms are the most popular/used at the moment and I knew by including them, that this question would be valuable to my research because by knowing the most chosen platform which is YouTube at 12 votes, it would be the best place to upload my final trailer. Furthermore, my product will appeal to my audience because it will be easily accessible on YouTube which is where the most of my viewers watch trailers.
  • 17. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience:
  • 18. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: When it came down to asking my audience what genre of music, they prefer to have in the background of an action trailer, I got a lot of feedback talking about diverse kinds of music. However, a running theme which I spotted amongst the answers, was this idea of lower pitched music with a real ‘WOW’ factor kind of bass and old school music such as the Artic Monkey’s which made an appearance more than once, which suggests that I should consolidate those three main statistics within my final fabrications to draw in the applicable type of viewers. Additionally, knowing that my survey stated that the bulk of my audience members are male, means that I can use music which is suited more to an action trailer alongside taking men’s perspectives into consideration when it comes down to forming the right number of songs to use within my media piece.
  • 19. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: Now, this question was used for me to understand and take into account what percent’s of my audience listen with headphones or out loud and they both came close to each other, just by the difference of 1 vote, the option ‘out loud’ won by 9 and ‘headphones’ came out with 8 votes, but because both choices were so close I have decided that when editing my video I will make sure that the audio doesn’t peak so whoever wears headphones or listens to it out loud, will get the full experience and to do this I have to keep an eye on the audio in Premiere Pro and make sure it doesn’t hit red.
  • 20. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: The total responses for this question was 14 because 3 respondents decided to skip it. However, the most voted option was style at a total of 6, which means that in order to persuade my audience to watch my trailer, I will have to reel them in by the style of my film poster and make sure that it relates to my video, so that my viewers are not immediately thrown off.
  • 21. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: Details to a minimum was voted the most, which links back to the knowledge about my audience because I know that not having lots of information or making sure to not reveal much about the plot is what my audience prefers, so not having a lot of information on the film poster works well in the whole scheme of things. Also, by having little detail on the film poster, means that they will be drawn in by iconography.
  • 22. Primary Audience research • Observation: • What this says about my audience: • How will your product appeal to this audience: Finally, the last question was used to get an idea on what kind of imagery my targeted audience favour and as you can see it was ‘Realistic’. I wanted to ask this question because there wouldn’t be any point in creating a film poster which sketched imagery because that doesn’t interest the right group of viewers, therefore I will entertain the idea of realistic designs. Lastly, my film poster will allure my viewership because of the realistic/detailed style it will have, whilst keeping details to a reduced amount.
  • 23. Subject Research Do’s Explain Video Length One of the defining features of the success of you video. Reasonable length. Convey message. • 28. Practical Research • (Music) I decided to experiment with some different music websites and see where I could find the most applicable and free music for my film trailer and so I tried a website called ‘Artist’ which offers a variety of music options, from genres, moods and styles. Because I knew I was going to create a small nature trailer, I filtered the search with nature so that the most popular and varied songs appeared and after listening to a few, I went with ‘ Revelations’ by Tristan Barton because as soon as I listened to it I knew that it would fit the vibe that I wanted to have throughout my whole video. In addition to this, I selected this one because it is a calm song but still adds the slight bit of mystery and danger and made the whole trailer seem mystical. Once I had chosen the song, I downloaded into my one drive, so that I could easily edit into my trailer on Premiere Pro.
  • 30. Practical Research • (importing files) Once I had downloaded the song and imported all the necessary files, I then began to put them all together in a certain order, so that each clip built up to a major clip where the main beat of the song is introduced, to make the short video more cinematic and have more of an impact on my audience. Throughout the process I made sure that each clip syncs with the music, which makes it seemingly smooth and more entertaining to keep the audiences focus in check. I edited the video using Premiere Pro.
  • 32. Practical Research • (colour editing) Throughout the process of putting all the clips together, I realized that the colours of the scenery were not to the standard that I wanted them to be, to be able to give off that cinematic look, so I used a technique called ‘Colourgradeing’, which allowed me to alter every aspect of the colours, such as, the saturation, tint, hue etc. Additionally a tool, which I newly discovered was something called ‘Curve’, which enables you to darken or lighten the imagery, which came in handy because I wanted the forest imagery to appear dark and empty, to consume my audience members. Furthermore, I did this throughout the whole video, editing the saturation and making certain aspects lighter or darker. In addition to this a particular detail which I carried out throughout this fabrication was making the green colours highly saturated so that they contrasted with the darker sky/trees.
  • 34. Practical Research • (added in effects) Lastly, during the development of my short nature trailer, I noticed that a few clips were not as smooth as I had hoped, so to solve this I used an effect which is called ‘Warp Stabilizer’, which can be applied to clips to make them smoother and reduce/get rid of any unstableness which occurred whilst filming. Additionally, towards the end of the scenes and the music, I added in a faded affect so that when the video ends the music smoothly fades out with it, it just gives it more of a professional look, which is what I aim for when creating my products.
  • 35. Practical Research • Bass music grasped my attention immediately • Slow-mo’s of soap/suds' dripping from the front of the car • Music switches as the car is being hosed down to reveal the freshly washed beauty of the vehicle. • Smooth, non complicated transitions • A slumber type off effect is placed across all imagery to make the video seem more cinematic • Towards end, the music quickens along with the transitions and speed of individual clips • Car is being polished and shot up close to capture the finer details, to really show off the car.
  • 36. Practical Research • Intense music- many different songs are [played to fit the imagery, transitions, cars and style. • Clearly a huge car show, which makes for the perfect location to record a car B-Roll, perfect footage source. • Music in-sync with transitions • Colour grading is a main aspect throughout the whole video because each clip has been edited so that when put tighter, it makes the perfect cinematic video. • Mix of slow-mo and quick transitions/duration of recordings • Varied sound effects (at the beginning where there is a few bits of text and is introduced with a sound, similar too a ‘woosh’) • Enhanced exhaust sounds to fit the theme of the product • A wide range of camera angles to form diversity
  • 37. Practical Research • Instantly intrigued by the sound effects at the beginning (a fast car moving through a tunnel) • Dimitri is the producer of the video and edited in his name to the video, by making it look like a sign on the highway • Peter McKinnon was his inspiration to create a Mercedes-Benz inspired B-Roll • Music switches to something more casual and imagery becomes a lot lighter to give off a more positive mood • After showing the driver get ready, it then shows him driving and including details about the car • A technique which the editor used was a countdown from 10 which showed 10 different parts to the car, to then pause and when the driver presses the dynamic button it quickly transitions from daytime to the evening, just like something you would witness in a VR game.
  • 40. Practical Research • (music experiment) To get more of an idea on how to produce the right music for my film trailer, I decided to experiment with the software called ‘ Garageband’ which allows you to choose beats, rhythms and instruments from a wide range of choices. To begin with, I selected an electoral instrument called ‘beat machine’ and you can either use a small piano keyboard or a selected number of keys on a keyboard, but I didn’t have access to a one- handed piano, so I used what I already had, and it turned out pretty well considering I had never used the software so intricately before. Once I had created my bass line, I then moved onto producing two other rhythms using the beat machine again and the ‘Agile synth bass’. In addition to this, it was difficult to work it at first but then I got the hang of it and really learnt my way around using an everyday keyboard to produce a short piece of music. Lastly, when I had finished, I exported the piece as a mp3 so that I could insert it into this PowerPoint and to make it easier to find/listen too.

  1. Choose a recent product similar to your own and annotate it Type of image- studio/location, angle, effects, post-production Use of lighting/composition/mise en scene/costume/props/location/colours/fonts etc. Audience appeal- how does it make its audience want to buy/watch/play it? Why have you chosen to look at this? What have you learned that can help you in your project?

  20. If you do any additional subject research, record that here. This might be most relevant if you are producing a magazine or a documentary but even a fiction trailer might require some additional research in to a particular subject. Getting some background information on your subject would be a really good idea. Find some resources, log them, read them and write something about them.

  23. Undertaking practical research is another great way to improve your project. Experimenting with techniques, equipment and processes you might want to use in you project will help you plan for the future. Think about what you will research. It could be studio photography, or sound recording, or post-production techniques for video or animation techniques for a video game. Tutorials are useful here. Make something similar but unrelated to your chosen idea. Do not make it a version of your final product; it is an experiment Provide a reflection of the processes you used and how it has been useful. Don’t do something that you already know how to do.
