Atherosclerotic plaque contains iron positive cells such as subendothelial macrophages. Macrophages accumulate in the layers of arteries and contribute to the formation of atherosclerotic plaque. The presence of iron positive macrophages is a characteristic of atherosclerotic plaque building up in arteries.
