WHAT IS EXPONENT?
As you have been ask to write down six multiplied by six, remember you haven’t been asked to
calculate it. So pick up your pen and write it as six times six. Here we multiply six by it self just once.
Now, let say you have been asked to write down six multiplied by six,multiplied by six . you write it
down as times six.
In this example, we are multiplying six by it self twice. Six multiplied by it self, multipliedby it self.
Now, you have been asked to write down six multiplied by six, multiplied by six and so on five times.
So may kind of borebut you don’t have a choice. So you write six times six, times six , times six and
so on five times. Yes, I know what you are thinking the more number of time you multiply a number
by it self, the more tedious it gets for you to write it down.
So that raises as to the question. Is there an easier way to denote this this kind of operations? What
kind of operations that I am talking about here.the one in which a number is multiplied by it self
many number of times.the answer of that question is yes we do which raise as to the topic of
exponents. Six multiplied by six can be written as six with the two in the super script. This is read as
six raised to two.
How do we get the two ? it depends on the number of six you can see. So, we have two six here. And
hence we write it as sik raised two there.
In the second case, we can see three sixs. Hence, it can be written as six raised to three. How do we
get three in the superscript ? that’s because we have three sixs. And in the final example we have one,
two , three, four , five . five sixs , so we write this long strange. Of number five six as six raised to
seven . if we have any number say “a” multiplied by it self many times , we write “a”multiplied by
“a” , multiplied by “a” , multiplied by “a” ,and so on.if there are “n” numbers of “a” in this product,
then it can be written as ”a” raised to “n”.
The number”a” is called the base, the number “n” iscalled the exponent. In the there examples, we
saw all of them have a based equal to six . it is just the exponent was two, in the second case the
exponent was there, and in the final example the exponent was five.
EXPONENT RULES
When you multiply numbers with exponents that have the same base, you add the
exponentsand keep the same base. Example, five to the fourth power times five to the fifth
power, equals five to the four plus five power equalsfive to the ninth power.
When you devide numbers with exponent that have the same base, you subtract the exponents
and keep the same base. Example, five to the seventh power devided by five to the fourth
power equals five to the seven minus four power, equals five to the cubed.
When you take an exponents of an exponents, you multiply the exponents. Example, five to
the fourth power to the fifth power equals five to the four times five power, equals five to the
twentieth power.
When you see a negative exponents, just put one over that numbers with a positive exponent.
Example five to the negative three power, equals one over five cubed, equals one over one
hundred twenty five.
When you multiply add the exponents. When you devide subtract the exponents, for an
exponents of an exponents you multiply for a negative exponent take one over the positive .
that’s exponents.
