1. What us Exponent ?
As you’ve been asked to write down five multiplied by five, remember you have’nt
been asked to calculate it. Let’s write it as five times five. Here we multiply five
by it self just once. Now try five times five times five. So, we are multiplying five
by it self twice. Then, what if we are multiplying five by it self more than twice. I
think we have problem to say it. In this example, five times five times five times
five times five. It waste our time. So, to make it simply, we use the mathematic’s
method that is exponents.
Five times five can be written as five to the two this read as five raised to two.
How do we get two ? because we have five twos. Then, five times five times five
can be written as five to the three, this read five raised to three. How do we get
three in the superscript ? Because we have five threes. Now, how about five times
five so on five times ? we can solve it with the same rule. So, we write it, five to
the five, this read as five raised to five. We get five in the superscript, because we
have five fives.
1.) 5×5 = 52
2.) 5×5×5 = 53
3.) 5×5×5×5×5 = 55
If we have any number say “a” multiplied by it self many times. We write “a”
multiplied by “a" multiplied by “a" so on. If there are “n” numbers of “a” in this
product, then it can be written as “a” raised to “n”. The number “a” is called the
base and “n” is called the exponent.
a×a×a× ...
a× a× a× ... ×a = an
n numbers
In the the three example, we saw all of them have a based equals five. It’s just
exponent that various. The first example, the exponent was two. The second
example, the exponent was three. The last example, the exponent was five.
