FRACTION
Addition of Fraction.
Addition of fraction is very easy. We have to remember just one thing. The denominator
always must be the same. Now, let’s take a bar of chocolate as our example with five
slices. One peace is one over five and two peaces is two over five. Let’s try and add one
over five and two over five. It would be three, three over five. So, one over five plus two
over five equals three over five. We are just adding the numerators. But the denominators
must be the same. Let’s look at one more example quickly. Take a martabak with six
slices. One peace is one sixth and three peaces is three sixths. Let’s add the two. We get
four sixths. So, that one sixth plus three sixths is equal to one plus three over six which
equals four over six. If we reduce four over six, we get two over three. Now let’s do one
without pictures. Three over seven plus two over seven. Since the denominators are the
same, we can simply add the numerator. Therefore, we have the numerator as three plus
two and the denominator remains seven. Hence, the answer is five over seven. Now, let’s
try and add two fractions which have different denominators. Let’s add two over three
and one over four. We can add the numerator only if the denominators are the same. The
LCM of three and four is twelve. So twelve, which is the LCM, is our new denominator.
Change the first number, two over three, so that it has twelve as the denominator. Two
over three will become two multiplied by four over three multiplied by four which equals
eight over twelve. And change the second number, one over four, so that it has twelve as
the deniminator. One over four will become one multiplied by three over four multiplied
by three which equals three over twelve. Note that we have the same the denominators.
We can simply add the numerators. Eight over twelve plus three over twelve equals eleven
over twelve. So, the answer is eleven over twelve.
