Dams are losing storage capacity at a rate of 0.5% per year due to siltation, equivalent to irrigating at least 10,000 hectares annually. In response, Morocco's High Commission for Water, Forest and Combating Desertification developed a National Watershed Management Plan from 1990-1996 with international organizations and national stakeholders. Many watershed management projects have been implemented under this plan using participatory and partnership approaches to promote integrated local development and natural resource management. These projects represent essential elements of national water and rural development strategies by improving rural livelihoods while conserving natural resources and promoting sustainable development. They are also key to combating desertification by addressing soil erosion.
Financing the sustainable and inclusive blue economy
This document discusses financing for a sustainable and inclusive blue economy. It proposes using public and private investments towards zero emission pathways that deliver on SDGs like protecting oceans and biodiversity. The new GEF assistance is designed to address the three highest priority transboundary problems in the Black Sea: eutrophication, discharge of toxic substances including oil, and loss of critical habitats. It provides two regional projects for the Black Sea and Danube River basins, as well as country-related investment projects. The goals are to reduce nutrient levels to allow ecosystem recovery, establish monitoring methods, and further assess nutrient loads and ecological status. A range of indicators are proposed to monitor nutrients and their effects, including chemical concentrations, biological parameters, and physical measurements. Highlights, opportunities and challenges
Wetlands International had several successes in 2010-2011, including influencing targets in the Convention on Biological Diversity to safeguard freshwater ecosystems and protect peatlands. They also completed the Wings Over Wetlands project which developed tools to protect migratory waterbird habitats. Challenges in 2012 include strengthening waterbird monitoring, demonstrating the role of wetlands in water management, and influencing policies to reduce the environmental impact of development projects and improve guidance on wetland carbon storage and restoration. Wetlands International will work on initiatives in several regions involving wetland conservation, restoration, and sustainable livelihoods while continuing organizational development.

- 2. DIKTAS: Protection and Sustainable Use of the Dinaric Karst Aquifer System
- 3. • At the regional level the project's objectives are: to facilitate the equitable and sustainable utilization of the transboundary water resources of the Dinaric Karst Aquifer System, and to protect the unique groundwater dependent ecosystems that characterize the Dinaric Karst region of the Balkan peninsula. The Dinaric Karst Aquifer System, shared by several countries and one of the world's largest, has been identified as an ideal opportunity for applying new and integrated management approaches to unique karst water resources and ecosystems. Full-size GEF regional project, implemented by UNDP and executed by UNESCO (2010-2014).
