An Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr Mandar Kubal Speaks to Pharma on How it ...Anup Soans
Key Point from the Q &A with Dr. Mandar Kubal, Mumbai
Telemedicine has become a very useful tool for clinicians to manage their patients.
Given the ever changing contours of Covid19 treatment, doctors have to check daily for online resources.
It would be wonderful if pharma can provide every specialty the latest developments in treating Covid19 with pre existing conditions instead of sending their unvaccinated field force to give brand reminders.
Pharma should seek frontline worker status for Medical Reps and Field Managers as they are critical to maintain the drug supply chain.
Treat the Field Force as an asset and protect them, instead of pushing them onto the field without vaccination.
And many more insights from a clinician at the frontlines of treating Covid19 patients.

This report explores important questions about the French healthcare system. How is healthcare innovation assessed in France? To what extent is value for money influencing price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry? Are national guidelines being adhered to in shaping France’s healthcare delivery?
This EIU report has been commissioned by Gilead Sciences. It looks at health outcomes of treatment relative to cost and at the structure of Spanish healthcare delivery, the process of making healthcare more accountable in Spain, and the growth and adoption of value-based measures.
Compared with its European neighbours, France has been slower to stake out a more aggressive policy for combatting obesity. In part, this is a simple question of numbers: around 15% of the country’s adult population was obese in 2014, well below the levels seen in England (24.8%), Germany (23.6%) or Spain (22.9%).
Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease which affects 1.5-5% of the population of most developed countries and an estimated 125m people worldwide. It manifests as
a fluctuating inflammatory skin disease and affects to varying degrees the quality of life of those who suffer from it. Despite policy recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO),1,2 many governments have taken little or no action to improve the
health of those living with psoriasis. Across Europe and Canada, work is under way by various parties to address the challenges posed by the disease, but those leading these
efforts say that they would benefit from more government interest and support.

Today Carol Lynch, our Global Head of Biopharmaceuticals, gave a keynote address to the European Biosimilars Group highlighting how biosimilars can help transform patient outcomes and calling for all stakeholders to work together to build trust and confidence. You can read the presentation here

3. Because France must make a decision and we need to demonstrate
that selfcare is beneficial to France...
There are still a few obstacles...
... but globally, the signs indicate to go ahead !
Why a manifest ?
3
4. We have real strong points
4
Relative difference in the price of
self-medication medecines
in France (%)
4,69€
+105%+95%
6%
+34%
+71%+43%
-41%
5. The symptoms disappeared and the patient
did not need to consult a doctor
The French people are ready !
5
FOR THE FRENCH PEOPLE QUESTIONED
Are willing to finance the treatment for
their own minor health issues
Treated minor symptoms by taking OTC medicine, in the use conditions
indicated, with pharmacist advice and without consulting a doctor during the
past 12 months
6. The GP’s are in favour of selfcare
6
GENERAL PRACTIONERS CONSIDER THAT
of their patients are able to take care of their
own health by taking OTC medicine, in the use
conditions indicated, with pharmacist advice
and without consulting a doctor
enable doctors to focus on more
severe health conditions
of the patients they see in consultation
could use responsible self-medication
reduce health care spendings
7. • The pharmacist gives key advice
within a self-medication approach
• His role could be developed
by positioning selfcare as the first step in the health care
process for minor health issues.
The pharmacist plays a key role
in the self-medication process
7
8. The health care system is in danger today ! It must evolve
The health care chain is saturated...
The development of selfcare :
a necessity in order to reorganise the health care
system...
8
Developing selfcare contributes to the creation of
a more positive and efficient model
9. • The French Public Health insurance has major financing issues.
The development of selfcare would contribute to maintain
sustainable, solidarity-based financing for severe and/or
long-term pathologies.
• Thanks to the development of selfcare
1.5 billion euros can be saved
in one year
... and ensure sustainable financing
by the French Public Health insurance
9
10. « My health, my choice »
The manifest
• Our purpose
Convince the authorities and political decision-makers of the potential of selfcare and
give them a “turnkey” solution to develop it.
• Our target
The major elections coming up in 2017 (election platforms currently under preparation)
are a unique opportunity to start changing things.
But it also provides a discussion and reflection rationale to interface with the sector’s
stakeholders : health care professionals, trade unions and professional federations,
think tanks, local officials, etc…
11. • Selfcare facts
• Selfcare : a strategic asset yet to be exploited to reorganise the health
care chain
• The economic challenge of self-medication in France : nearly 1.5 billion
euros in one year are at stake !
• How we can develop self-medication in France ?
Key elements of the manifest
11
12. How to develop self-medication in France ?
• Reform the financial coverage and develop the self-medication medicine
offer
• Associate health care professionals and patients to this new health care
strategy
• Facilitate self-medication and ensure it is financially accessible in order to
obtain patient support
Focus on our recommendations
