This document describes an experiment that aimed to determine if the expression of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene is altered in obese tissue compared to lean tissue and between diabetic tissue and control tissue. Tissues from obese and lean rats, and from diabetic and non-diabetic rats, were analyzed using gene isolation, reverse transcription PCR, PCR, gel electrophoresis and quantitative PCR to compare VEGF expression levels between tissues. The results found no significant differences in VEGF expression between tissues, suggesting further work is needed to establish VEGF's role in pain associated with obesity and diabetes.
