1. NOVEMBER 9, 2014”: 25Th ANNIVERSARY
OF THE FALLING OF “THE WALL”
On November 9, 1989, exactly a quarter of a century ago, the dreaded Berlin Wall, the abominable "Iron Curtain" finally was demolished ... perhaps one of the events with greatest impact within the past century.
The consequences of this fall have been enormous: the fall of communism and the whole "Soviet Bloc" and its economic and sociopolitical model; the end of the so- called "cold war" and a bipolar world characterized by the fear of nuclear threat; a new political map involving the socio-economic revival of various nationalities out of the former Soviet republics; and of course, the expected German reunification which demarcated a new stage and a new pace for this impressive and unstoppable global power.
25 years after the fall of this tragic and hideous wall, the world can feel its tremendous implications. We will never be able to end up thanking the boldness and courage of leaders like Mikhail Gorbachev, Lech Walesa and Pope John Paul II, central characters who are credited with leading this historic event of monumental proportions.
The vivid graphic testimony of AIESECers at the time of the fall, stuck in this composition photographed for our delight, was recently rescued (I'm not sure how), by Tina Adolfsson. Now this flies around the world in different virtual sites of AIESEC and Alumni on the Internet.
Although many lessons about separateness and division were taught by this hideous wall, it is said that it has not completely fallen yet, since several aspects still distinguish the ex-2-Germanies; also, the world sadly built many other walls during these years: this proves that for man it is very difficult to learn in foreign body.
