2. Before the Revolution
Our country was plunged into sadness and fear.
For more than 40 years Salazar was the ruler and after him,
Marcelo Caetano.
There was no democracy, free elections were not held and the
rulers were always alike.
3. In Portugal, before April 25th 1974, there was no freedom of
speech and people could not read whatever they wanted to and
they had almost no access to the media as well.
The ones who contested the regime, were immediately arrested
and tortured by P.I.D.E. (Polícia Internacional e de Defesa do
Estado), the potuguese political police at the time.

The End of Dictatorship
The military, already tired of so many conflicts and lack of
freedom, created the MFA (Movimento das Forças Armadas),
whose mission was to put na end to the government.
They agreed that in the early hours of April 25, 1974, they would
overthrow the regime of Marcelo Caetano (who followed in
Salazar's footsteps after his death), shortly after listening to two
songs on the radio that indicated them the right time to move
forward.
5. Those songs
were:
“Grândola Vila Morena”, by Zeca Afonso.
“E depois do Adeus”, by Paulo de Carvalho

6. The Carnation
The Carnation became one of the symbols of the 25th April, this military
action being known worldwide as the Carnation Revolution (A Revolução
dos Cravos).
Someone started handing out carnations to the soldiers who quickly put
them in the barrels of their shotguns.
7. Main changes after the
Revolution
• Abolition of censorship;
• Launch of an overseas policy that would lead to peace;
• Freedom of association;
• Liberation of all political prisoners;
• Immediate extinction of P.I.D.E;
• Free elections
