Intro
Why this program for professional development?
We’ve tried other methods of PD, didn’t want to reinvent the wheel, time poor staff need flexible options (eg 1min CPD)
Program design
Reviewed other versions of 23 Things from Irish Library Association, Scottish and Australian universities and due to licensing, this could be reused. (Acknowledging them in our FAQ)
Agreed on using unsplash.com for feature images (ease of use and open licensed)
Chose a big list from other programs and asked for feedback from staff to finalise the list
Reaching past the brick wall and closed systems.
Reaching a wide audience that included VET, HE, Research and all staff levels
Part of the digital literacy story is learning about the open web
Communication and collaboration is part of the digital literacy ‘story’, we wanted this to be encouraged both within the University but more widely.
Have the opportunity for our staff to interact with our networks (TELedvisors, PLN, SIGs, ALT)
Next we had to look at what choices we had for platforms
Wordpress is open compared to the our internal options : LMS or internal wiki
An open platform allows for participation within and outside of the University
No extra cost to the department and was University endorsed platform
Worked with inhouse web developers for Wordpress templates
Created standard weekly Portfolio Item (versus blog posts)
Allowed for a variety of writing styles (eg first person, stories and academic writing)
We wrote with a team of authors
What does it look like?
Home page – design and subscribe options
List of Things – overall program view and rolling out the weekly posts
About page – includes FAQ, reference sites and licensing
Thing 1 – template design and comments section
