“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.” – Marie Curie
Sharks are disappearing without us noticing or caring. They are facing extinction. Some species are over 90% extinct.
More than 100 million sharks are killed per year. There is no global protection of sharks – there is no where we can ensure sharks can escape the slaughter. And even in our protected areas, there aren’t enough resources to patrol and keep our sharks safe.
This is complicated by the fact that people don't know about the issue or don't care about sharks because they don't realize how amazing – and critical – they are. Sharks are consistently misrepresented in the media as bloodthirsty and insatiable enemies of mankind, inspiring irrational fear in every body of water. This irrational fear has resulted in a lack of sympathy or concern for what we believe to be an important and grand animal.
Sharks have been in the oceans for over 400 million years, forming the life that has evolved within the seas. As predators at the top of the food chain, they play a critical role in maintaining the health of the ocean ecosystem. We have already witnessed the complete collapse of mollusk fisheries in Chesapeake Bay and the death of much of the coral in Belize both due to the cascading domino effects when sharks were removed from those fragile ecosystems. There is no telling what far-reaching effects we may experience if we remove sharks from our oceans, but the thought terrifies me. The oceans are our life support system: they control our climate, they provide our food and they generate 70% of the oxygen we breathe and remove 70% of carbon dioxide – the global warming gas.
Sharks are prey – not predators. At this point, up to 90% of key shark species have been destroyed but the demand for is still at an all time high fueled by greed. Even our marine reserves are the target of illegal shark fisheries.
If we don’t act now, we are going to lose our sharks – and our oceans – our life support systems on this planet. Everyone needs to be aware of this situation – and everyone needs to join the fight. We can save our sharks by coming together in a grass roots movement and turning our passion into action.

Catfish noodling, or Okie noodling hand fishing for catfish with your bare hands, is a popular pastime in some states, but it’s also illegal in others. California has outlawed the activity because of the danger involved. Noodlers can easily get their fingers caught in the fish’s mouth or gills and be pulled into the water. Despite the dangers of snapping turtles, people still enjoy this sport and will travel to states where it is legal to participate. What do you think about noodling for catfish? Is it a fun way to catch fish, or is it too dangerous?

When I started work on Blackfish, I could not possibly have imagined the effect it would have on
SeaWorld. Let’s be honest. Not a lot of people see documentaries. And not a lot of people want
to see a movie that sucker punches a beloved cultural icon. But it seems as though the movie has
indeed changed how many view the park.
Over the past couple of years, SeaWorld’s visitor numbers have fallen, its stock has plummeted,
lawsuits have confronted their business practices, legislation has challenged what goes on at
Shamu Stadium, and reported profits were down 84% on the previous year.
People ask me whether this is a win. I can only say that it was inevitable, and that I hope it’s only
the beginning. Today’s kids are increasingly becoming part of the “I can’t believe we used to do
that” generation. They now that killer whales are not suitable for captivity.
Instead of acknowledging this, SeaWorld has decided to spend its way out of the crisis. With its
glossy, protracted PR fight, it continues to claim it is battling an image problem. Yet I see no
meaningful change. I guess this is what happens when a corporation operates essentially
ungoverned for 45 years. But I know many of us still hold out hope that SeaWorld, in one final
Hail Mary pass, will do something drastically progressive – like stopping their breeding
programme. This would mean no more baby Shamus for SeaWorld. It would mean that the
whales currently at SeaWorld would be the last it will ever have in captivity.
After this, SeaWorld could almost singlehandedly pioneer a sea sanctuary where it could retire
the remaining whales. Seaworld’s whales are unlikely to know how to hunt for their own food.
They’re given antibiotics and might die if they’re not in human care. They can’t simply be tossed
back into the ocean. But a killer whale sanctuary would provide these animals with a massive,
cordoned off, ocean cove where they could live out their lives in a healthier and more dignified
way.
In a sea sanctuary they could echolocate on new and novel objects every day. They could
experience the natural rhythms of the ocean. They would have more control over their lives and
their choices. And this could be a profit-making endeavour for SeaWorld, with admission fees, a
visitor centre, an underwater viewing area, etc. It’s hard to imagine people not showing up in

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Our Goal
Due to the gargantuan decrease
in the global shark population,
our group has been striving to
illegalize the dismemberment
of sharks in our nation (US).
Starting with the revaluation of
state laws, we will find the most
useful and beneficial way to
remove shark finning in the
U.S.
4. Once we get home, we’ll create
flyers. We’ll hand them out at
various stores or supermarkets
locally. The flyers will convince
people of how bad the process of
shark finning is, and they’ll stop
buying the cut off fins. They’ll
spread the information to their
friends and family. As more and
more people stop buying shark fin
soup, the price of shark fins will
decrease. Once that happens,
poachers will abandon their hunt
for sharks and search for
something else to hunt.
Our
Action
Plan
5. What is
Shark
Finning?
Why is it so
cruel?
Shark finning is when a poacher cuts
the fins from sharks and dumps the
bodies back into the ocean. When they
are discarded into the ocean, the sharks
are still alive, but without fins. Without
fins, the sharks are unable to swim, so
they start to sink. As they sink, they
either die of suffocation or die from
blood loss. This act of cruelty is both
unsustainable and inhumane.
7. Why are
sharks
poached for
their fins?
There are many aspects of poaching.
Some do it for the thrill, others for
collections of exotic food. Although,
the main reason sharks are poached
is for status, and believed medical
properties of their fin meat. In the
culinary world, the sharks poached
are used to make shark fin soup.
However, the aforementioned shark
fins are equally valuable in black
markets, because shark
fins are illegal in many countries.
Sharks fins are also a part of the
status quo in certain Asian cultures.
8. How Could
Shark
Poaching
Affect the
Ecosystem?
Many sharks are considered apex
predators, which means they are the
only thing keeping other animal
populations from growing
uncontrollably. Without sharks,
marine biodiversity would collapse
within itself; the population of fish
lower on the food chain would likely
grow out of proportion, causing the
ecosystem to become unstable.
Moreover, these populations will
result in overwhelming nourishment
towards other predators, ruining the
aquatic environment.
9.
10. What happens
to the shark
population?
● Every year, about 72 million
sharks are poached for their
fins.
● It is estimated that the shark
population has decreased by
60% in the last 10 years.
● Shark fins can be legally sold in
many U.S. states.
● 143 species of sharks are
vulnerable, near threatened,
endangered or critically
endangered.
11. How Can You
Help?
You can truly help the sharks by
donating to companies as passionate
as we are, such as Lush and Shark
Stewards. Whether you are buying
merchandise, donating money, or
even adopting a shark, you are
contributing to a declining species.
Spreading the word of shark finning
and how this animal cruelty is sad to
watch, is another way to spread
awareness and make this problem
more known internationally. Any
supporter we receive will be a big
asset to the prevention.
12. Our Sponsor
We have chosen Shark Stewards as our
non-profit organization. It’s big mission
is to restore the ocean’s health , which
they’ll do by saving sharks from
overfishing and shark fin trade. They
also want to protect important aquatic
creatures in general.
In the course of our stay here, we were
able to get in contact with the multi-
million dollar making company titled
“Lush”. We went back and forth
messaging, discussing their shark
awareness line and our cause was
supported by them. You will see this in
the email shown on the screen.
