NAB Start Counting is a one-day, behavioural change
program that has been specifically developed to help
employers take action on this important issue.
CHANGE THE FUTURE OF
THE WOMEN YOU WORK WITH
Women’s economic contribution has never been
higher, yet reports continue to show that women
trail men in their earnings, savings, superannuation
balances and often their confidence in making long-
term money choices.
Women in your business could be experiencing
stress, disengagement and low self-esteem, leading
to poor performance at work and costing your
business in terms of lost productivity.
DRIVING LONG-TERM POSITIVE
BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE
Start Counting has been developed to drive
long-term positive behavioural change in your female
workforce. This high value, low-touch program is
designed to seamlessly complement your existing
diversity, gender equality and employee engagement
and reward strategies or be a stand-alone proof point
to showcase your commitment to gender equity.

TAKING POSITIVE
ACTION
THE LIFE WORKSHOP:
• Made a significant difference
to participants who arrived
with a gloomier outlook,
as well as boosting the
confidence of those who were
already fairly confident before
the program began.
• Significantly increased clarity
around their life goals.
• Prompted participants to make
plans for how they would
achieve their life goals, and
the impact was statistically
significant immediately after
the workshop with the effect
maintained at the six-month
mark.
• Prompted participants to
start working more actively
towards their life goals.
“My employer gets
back a more confident,

KATE

“It’s about making sure that
I’m able to manage all of the
things that are going on in
my personal life so that I can
be confident and happy and
productive when I get to work.”
VANESSA
GADENS
“I would say that this program
is one of the best things that I’ve
ever done and I’m so glad that
I actually was invited to do it.
It really opens up your eyes to
you as a person and your future
and it’ll change your life.”

START COUNTING OUTCOMES
WORKSHOP
ONE
LIFE
(3.5 hours)
Drawing on positive psychology and personal development tools,
women learn important skills to achieve lasting wellbeing.
While Start Counting is not about providing tailored individual financial advice, it gives
women permission to focus on themselves, to understand their life goals and gain insight
into their money habits and how they can make positive changes.
REDUCED STRESS TAKING POSITIVE ACTION
THE MONEY WORKSHOP:
• Significantly reduced stress when
making financial decisions and
significantly increased control
over finances.
• Brought a 37% increase in ability to
manage money through unexpected
life changes.
• Increased alignment between financial
decision-making and life goals by 46%.
The majority of participants had not
been actively aligning their money
decisions with what they wanted out
of life. The Start Counting program
prompted them to start doing it.
• Increased confidence in managing money
by 23%. Participants had actively engaged
in planning for their financial futures and
they became even more active over the
following three months.
• Drove a large increase in financial
awareness through five OECD variables:
keeping track of finances, planning
ahead, comparison shopping of
financial products, staying informed
and exercising financial control. An
improvement of 67% was still evident
six months after they left the program.”“It makes sense that finance and
money is in focus. However, there’s
a lot more that’s covered, like positive
thinking – how can I take that stop
sign down that’s in front of me?
How can I plan for the future?
What do I do, maybe on a regular
basis, that slows me down? What
can I change in my environment to
improve myself?
All those kinds of things definitely
have a positive impact on your work
and therefore for your employer.”
CLAUDIA
AKAMAI
“It’s not about financial planning,
it’s about the attitude you have towards
money and the effect and the influence
it has on you. It’s made me feel a lot
more empowered about money.”

HR LEADERS IDENTIFY
THEIR EMPLOYEES’ NEEDS
At the 2015 National Australian Human Resources Institute Convention and
Exhibition, the Start Counting team surveyed more than 200 HR leaders
about what they want to be known for professionally and which parts of
their female workforce need extra focus.
START COUNTING ADDS VALUE FOR ALL WOMEN IN YOUR WORKFORCE
HR leaders tell us that the Start Counting program is adding value as a stand-alone solution or to strengthen
existing human resource frameworks including:
• TOP TALENT AND EMERGING LEADERS: Invest
in and foster the personal and professional goals of
top talent and emerging leaders.
• RETURN-TO-WORK MOTHERS: Empower and
re-establish confidence for return-to-work mothers.
• GRADUATES: Build loyal and confident graduates
within a competitive and mobile workforce.
• DIVERSITY AGENDAS: Demonstrate that you’re a
progressive organisation with a focus on diversity
and gender equity.
• REWARDS AND EMPLOYEE BENEFITS: Encourage
personal and professional growth through reward
and recognition programs and employee benefits.
‘DEVELOPING INITIATIVES
THAT STRENGTHEN EMPLOYEE
ENGAGEMENT, BUILDING A
CULTURE OF EMPOWERMENT,
OPPORTUNITIES AND GROWTH.’
‘EMPOWERING PEOPLE
TO PERFORM AT
THEIR BEST AND AS A
THOUGHT LEADER.’
‘MAKING A PATHWAY
FOR MORE FEMALES INTO
ROLES OF LEADERSHIP
AND INFLUENCE.’
HR LEADERS IN AUSTRALIA TOLD US
THEY WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR:
Counting women from your organisation into Start Counting will support these goals and more.
START COUNTING IS CREATING
POSITIVE CHANGE AND
MEASURABLE OUTCOMES:
The one-day commitment for your employees is
made up of two half-day workshops held away from
the office during business hours, with one week
between each workshop.
Start Counting’s industry-leading behaviour change
program is tracked in an 18-month longitudinal
survey. Participants are surveyed immediately before
the program, immediately after, and at three and
six-month intervals.
PARTICIPANT MINDSET BEFORE
START COUNTING4
:
• Participants felt their finances were out of control,
and they were ill-equipped to deal with unexpected
life circumstances.
• 59% of participants were unclear or unsure about
where they wanted to head in life.
• A large majority (81%) of participants felt
unprepared or unsure about their ability to manage
money through any life changes that might arise –
such as redundancy, job changes, children, divorce
or retirement.

AS THE DEVELOPER OF START COUNTING,
NAB IS ACTIVELY COMMITTED TO
EMPOWERING AUSTRALIAN WOMEN
NAB is proud to be a 2015 WGEA
Employer of Choice for Gender Equality
by the Workplace Gender Equality
Agency (WGEA), recognising employers
that are leaders in gender equality.

RECOMMENDED BY AUSTRALIAN HR LEADERS:
“Start Counting has been really
important to us. We’ve put a
number of our senior women
through the program and it’s been
really fantastic in terms of building
resilience and confidence. It’s not
just about diversity for diversity’s
sake – it makes good business
sense.”
Gaye Haug, Head of People, KPMG
“Don’t hesitate. Book it. It gives
your organisation a real buzz.
There’s very little in the market that
takes into account both sides – the
confidence and the practical skills.”
Christie Welsh, GM Shared Services,
Cuscal
“If employees are happy and
engaged and if they’re feeling
confident, then they’re going to
step into situations, they’re going
to devote that discretionary
time to things that lead to better
performance for them – it helps
them to achieve their goals, and
our people achieving their goals
helps our organisations achieve
our goals as well. The more we can
help people feel supported in their
whole lives, then the more they can
perform at work.“
Dayle Stevens, NAB GM and Women in
Technology Founder

  • 5. HR LEADERS IDENTIFY THEIR EMPLOYEES’ NEEDS At the 2015 National Australian Human Resources Institute Convention and Exhibition, the Start Counting team surveyed more than 200 HR leaders about what they want to be known for professionally and which parts of their female workforce need extra focus. START COUNTING ADDS VALUE FOR ALL WOMEN IN YOUR WORKFORCE HR leaders tell us that the Start Counting program is adding value as a stand-alone solution or to strengthen existing human resource frameworks including: • TOP TALENT AND EMERGING LEADERS: Invest in and foster the personal and professional goals of top talent and emerging leaders. • RETURN-TO-WORK MOTHERS: Empower and re-establish confidence for return-to-work mothers. • GRADUATES: Build loyal and confident graduates within a competitive and mobile workforce. • DIVERSITY AGENDAS: Demonstrate that you’re a progressive organisation with a focus on diversity and gender equity. • REWARDS AND EMPLOYEE BENEFITS: Encourage personal and professional growth through reward and recognition programs and employee benefits. ‘DEVELOPING INITIATIVES THAT STRENGTHEN EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT, BUILDING A CULTURE OF EMPOWERMENT, OPPORTUNITIES AND GROWTH.’ ‘EMPOWERING PEOPLE TO PERFORM AT THEIR BEST AND AS A THOUGHT LEADER.’ ‘MAKING A PATHWAY FOR MORE FEMALES INTO ROLES OF LEADERSHIP AND INFLUENCE.’ HR LEADERS IN AUSTRALIA TOLD US THEY WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR: Counting women from your organisation into Start Counting will support these goals and more. START COUNTING IS CREATING POSITIVE CHANGE AND MEASURABLE OUTCOMES: The one-day commitment for your employees is made up of two half-day workshops held away from the office during business hours, with one week between each workshop. Start Counting’s industry-leading behaviour change program is tracked in an 18-month longitudinal survey. Participants are surveyed immediately before the program, immediately after, and at three and six-month intervals. PARTICIPANT MINDSET BEFORE START COUNTING4 : • Participants felt their finances were out of control, and they were ill-equipped to deal with unexpected life circumstances. • 59% of participants were unclear or unsure about where they wanted to head in life. • A large majority (81%) of participants felt unprepared or unsure about their ability to manage money through any life changes that might arise – such as redundancy, job changes, children, divorce or retirement. 4. The more we can help people feel supported in their whole lives, then the more they can perform at work.“ Dayle Stevens, NAB GM and Women in Technology Founder AS A SOCIAL INITIATIVE, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THE PROGRAM PRICE LOW AT $950 PER PERSON (inc.
