This document discusses the biblical prophecy of Elijah coming before the Day of the Lord to reconcile families. It explores how Elijah modeled family reconciliation, how John the Baptist fulfilled this mission by calling people to repentance and righteous living, and how we are called to this mission of reconciliation today to prepare people for Christ's second coming. The key aspects of reconciliation discussed are restoring relationships with God and each other through faith and obedience to God's commands.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

2. ‘Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming
of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn the
heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the
children to their fathers; lest I come and smite the earth with
a curse’ ”Malachi 4:5, 6,
3. A prophecy about reconciliation: Malachi 4:5-6
A role model of reconciliation: Elijah
Elijah and family (1 Kings 17)
Elijah and the Church (1 Kings 18)
The fulfillment of the prophecy: John the Baptist
Reconciliation in the End Time: The current Elijah
“Before the coming of the day of
the Lord,” Elijah is figuratively
coming to reconcile the parents to
their children.
A people is called to fulfill Elijah's
mission before the Second Coming
of Jesus.
How did Elijah reconcile families?
How did John the Baptist do it? How
should we do it nowadays?
4. There are several dimensions to the reconciliation
in this prophecy:
• God forgives His children and encourages them to
turn to Him (Micah 7:18-19; Isaiah 44:22)
• Committing to the covenant of our ancestors with
God (Deuteronomy 4:29-31)
• Restoring the peace and the understanding within
family (Proverbs 4:3-4)
5. Elijah was called to condemn that
situation, and he had to flee to save his
life.
When the drought got worse, he was
introduced to a widow who hosted him.
Her faith was strong (Luke 4:26), but she
thought that the death of her son was a
consequence of her own sins (Micah 6:7).
God's power can restore families, and the
faith in God and His Word arose again in
her heart.
The kingdom of Israel had abandoned
God. They had swapped teachings
which upraised marriage, family and
healthy sexuality for practices which
encouraged prostitution, incest and
sexual perversions.
6. “Then Elijah said to all the people, 'Come near to me.'
So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the
altar of the Lord that was broken down.” (1 Kings 18:30)
Elijah's first step was to invite the people to come near to
him. Jesus also invites us to come near to Him
(Matthew 11:28).
In the second place, he repaired the altar. Are there altars
that must be restored in your life? How is your family altar?
The people had
finally reconciled
to God, and
streams of
blessings came
down.
Finally, fire came down at the time of the evening sacrifice. Fire didn't come down
on sinners, but on the sacrifice [Jesús]. The people [the Church] burst into praise
and abandoned sin [thus killing the false priests].
7. “And if you are willing to accept it, he
[John] is the Elijah who was to come.”
(Matthew 11:14 NIV)
John fulfilled his reconciling mission
by preaching two main principles:
1. Repentance (Matthew 3:1-2)
2. A change in behavior
(Matthew 3:8)
John led people to reconcile
themselves to God first. Then,
with His help, to seek holiness (as
their ancestors know it).
When we change our behavior, we
can also reconcile ourselves to
others.
This is how John prepared the
people to receive their Savior. He
was so successful that his own
disciples left him to follow Jesus
(John 1:35-37).
8. “And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit
and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the
parents to their children and the disobedient to
the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a
people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:17 NIV)
Our heavenly Father has turned the hearts of His children
back to Himself and has turned the hearts of His children to
each other through the Cross of Christ. Then He's given the
ministry of reconciliation to us (2 Corinthians 5:18).
We must prepare a
people to receive Jesus
at His Second Coming.
The message won't be delivered if the
messengers don't live what they preach.
The most powerful testimony is a personal and
family life that shows repentance, true
conversion, love and genuine care about
others.
9. “When as a people our works correspond
with our profession, we shall see very much
more accomplished than now. When we have
men as devoted as Elijah, and possessing the
faith which he possessed, we shall see that
God will reveal Himself to us as He did to holy
men of old. When we have men who, while
they acknowledge their deficiencies, will
plead with God in earnest faith as did Jacob,
we shall see the same results. Power will
come from God to man in answer to the
prayer of faith. […] We must have a converted
ministry, and then we shall see the light of
God and His power aiding all our efforts.”
E.G.W. (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 4, p. 402)
10. “Today, in the spirit and power of Elias and of John
the Baptist, messengers of God’s appointment are
calling the attention of a judgment-bound world to
the solemn events soon to take place in connection
with the closing hours of probation and the
appearance of Christ Jesus as King of kings and Lord
of lords. Soon every man is to be judged for the deeds
done in the body. The hour of God’s judgment has
come, and upon the members of His church on earth
rests the solemn responsibility of giving warning to
those who are standing as it were on the very brink
of eternal ruin. To every human being in the wide
world who will give heed must be made plain the
principles at stake in the great controversy being
waged, principles upon which hang the destinies of
all mankind.”
