 Performed a holistic evaluation of the database and storage environments upon joining the
Company. Identified significant technical deficiencies, misconfigurations and tuning
opportunities at multiple levels that were negatively impacting performance and stability.
 Established and implemented an interim tactical plan to stabilize the existing database
(mainly Oracle) and storage infrastructure on both Linux / RAC and Solaris HA environments

o Database overhaul for Oracle featured an appliance-based strategy – Oracle’s

improve fault tolerance and availability. Converted unstable DB2-resident database
environments to Exadata.
o Storage remediation featured migration from VMAX10K and VMAX20K to a
combination of 3PAR (block) and ZFS (file) strategy which now exceeds 4 Petabytes.
 Presently evaluating DBaaS, SaaS / private cloud strategies, including openstack, to leverage
existing investments and facilitate movement into other forward-looking technologies to
improve agility and time to market.
 Preparing to extend Exadata beyond its current OLTP use-case into the business intelligence
space using Hadoop and / or Oracle’s Big Data Appliance (BDA).
Total savings over a 3-year period will exceed $6 million (hard dollars), uptime now
exceeds 99.99% and continues to improve. Storage related costs have been reduced
by 80% while increasing capacity 6-fold.

and fault-tolerant infrastructure consisting of a series of Sun clusters (SPARC and x86) and most recently

(MDM).
 Architected, planned, sized, internally marketed and justified a $7 million investment in Oracle
Exadata database machine and ZFS Storage appliance hardware and related software to
support significant growth in Data Warehouse footprint (100+ TB) and increased user-base and

checkpoints, ZFS Clones and Replication providing local and remote data fault posture
leveraging our server farm designto dynamically reconfigure environment to handle a wide range
of failure scenarios.
 Architected, planned and managed the phased upgrade of the database infrastructure first to
Oracle9i RAC, Oracle10g RAC, Oracle 11gR2 RAC and most recently, to a two-frame Oracle
Exadata database machine platform coupled with Oracle’s ZFS Storage appliance over time
keeping up-to-date with the latest technology trends.
 Designed and architected the entire remaining middle-tier and database tier hardware footprint
which consisting two M5000 clustered farms in two data centers and a Cisco UCS blade server-
based clustered server farm using FCoE, 10gE, iSCSI, Fibre Channel SAN attached storage,
NFS, ZFS, dNFS and SAS and PCIe SSD disk.
 Performed deep storage level tuning, converting NetApp infrastructure into 64-bit OS and an in-
place aggregate redesign, overcoming 32-bit limits on aggregate sizes and other shortcomings.
 Designed and implemented a new HA platform for the equities trading system (Sybase) using
Veritas VCS and VVR using Sun M5000 hardware.
 Designed and implemented an HA platform for the fixed income trading system using Oracle10g
RAC on Linux. Re-architected vendor-created database and performed extensive
troubleshooting to stabilize application.
These efforts have resulted in a stable and robust infrastructure while significantly improving
availability and performance from both the overnight batch and end user points of view. The
overnight batch cycle runtime has improved by well more than 75%, user report and application
response time has improved by 400+% and the environment has achieved better than 99.99%
