When I was a teenager, I spent my monthly allowance visiting this basement shop in a London Alley near Oxford Street … at the time, it was the only place in the whole of the UK to buy *really* cutting-edge European Death Metal music.
Technology has changed our world so much over the last two decades that my youth seems like ancient history; but over the next two decades, the changes that will become possible as technology develops will be even more striking; and it may even be hard to recognise the way that we interact with our future world as "human behaviour" as we understand it now.
As consumer technologies such as social media, open data and smartphones evolve through the next-generation of "human/computer interfaces", the incredible power of future technology will be put into the hands of individuals and small businesses. By opening up cities' digital infrastructure to them, business and government can help people and cities to help themselves.
Google Glass, smart watches, athletic monitoring bracelets, and even Oculus Rift, the virtual reality goggles, have triggered the imagination of mobile developers ready to explore the potential of placing a computer on the body. Researchers have been developing wearable computers for many years, but today’s miniaturized, low-cost components and powerful mobile processors have made it easy to develop devices that integrate a persons physical state, location, and gestures. These devices can solve many accessibility issues, from detecting oncoming sirens for deaf individuals to hands-free control of mobile phones, wheelchairs, and other devices. Head mounted devices track the user’s sightline, motion-based sensors track gestures and movements, and geolocation provides context specific information. This talk introduces today’s wearable computers, key research projects, and what ideas for future products.

My talk is called "New and Emerging Forms of Data: Past, Present, and Future” and I will be giving a perspective from my role as one of the ESRC Strategic Advisers for Data Resources, in which I was responsible for new and emerging forms of data and realtime analytics. The talk also includes some of the current work in the Oxford e-Research Centre on Social Machines (the SOCIAM project) and an introduction to the PETRAS Internet of Things project.
The talk raises a number of important issues looking ahead, including massive scale of data that is already being supplied by Internet of Things, the implications of automation in our research, reproducibility and confidence in research results. I will also ask, how can the new forms of data and new research methods enable social scientists to work in new ways, and can we move on from the dependence on the traditional investment in longitudinal studies?

Project GaitNet: Ushering in the ImageNet moment for human Gait kinematics
The emergence of the upright human bipedal gait can be traced back 4 to 2.8 million years ago, to the now extinct hominin Australopithecus afarensis. Fine grained analysis of gait using the modern MEMS sensors found on all smartphones not just reveals a lot about the person’s orthopedic and neuromuscular health status, but also has enough idiosyncratic clues that it can be harnessed as a passive biometric. While there were many siloed attempts made by the machine learning community to model Bipedal Gait sensor data, these were done with small datasets oft collected in restricted academic environs. In this talk, we will introduce the ImageNet moment for human gait analysis by presenting 'Project GaitNet', the largest ever planet-sized motion sensor based human bipedal gait dataset ever curated. We’ll also present the associated state-of-the-art results in classifying humans harnessing novel deep neural architectures and the related success stories we have enjoyed in transfer-learning into disparate domains of human kinematics analysis.
