Slides from workshop which led delegates to better understand the need to better define problems and how to discover and develop ideas to the problems[challenges]
This slide deck was used at an event at Imperial College Business School to give an overview of Nesta’s work in the area of accelerators, to outline some of the trends in the accelerator ecosystem, and to highlight current research in this area.
Dr. Phil Richards discussed Jisc's new approach of co-design and future developments. The co-design approach involves users in the development process to create services that meet their needs. Jisc will focus on strategic themes identified through co-design and engage more partners, like colleges and universities, in the process. They also aim to better support further education through initiatives like the Education Technology Action Group and potential online learning platforms.
On December 8, 2008, Bill Appelbe, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientist of the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC) in Australia, was in Calgary to give a special presentation to Cybera’s members. The talk, which was broadcast over videoconference to members in Edmonton and Lethbridge, focused on changing trends in cyberinfrastructure development.
Similar to Cybera, VPAC is a state-based research service provider to industry, academia and government. Appelbe's presentation highlighted the growing number of partnerships developing between VPAC and industry partners.
Innovation in a rapidly changing world (by Len Middleton)Robert Pasick, Ph.D
This document summarizes key points from a discussion on innovation. It outlines current models of medical innovation centers, challenges facing innovation in the US, and trends in technology development. Universities are increasingly offering entrepreneurship courses but large companies worry internal R&D is slow. Open innovation is presented as a model to access external ideas and resources through collaborations. The document also discusses implications for Michigan, including its past role in innovation through facilities like Willow Run Laboratories.
The document discusses what drives prosperity according to Christian Ketels. It notes that many factors matter and there is no single solution, as what matters depends on a location's existing assets. Success is driven by building on unique strengths, not just fixing weaknesses. Effective policy requires understanding a place's specific context, focusing on areas of existing competitive advantage, and coordinated action across policy areas to strengthen clusters over time. Key challenges include developing new strengths, improving cluster data, and integrating cluster initiatives with broader economic policies.
The document provides an overview of the Outercurve Foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to enable open source software development and sharing of code between companies and communities. It discusses types of open source non-profits and their benefits and challenges. The Outercurve Foundation aims to provide benefits like liability protection, management of intellectual property, and operational support to open source projects while remaining agnostic to licenses, technologies, and development processes used. It establishes a "Gallery" system where sponsors can start technology-themed groups for projects. Outercurve provides services to help projects throughout their lifecycle at a lower cost than starting a new non-profit.
Using experiments in innovation policy (short)Nesta
The document discusses using experimentation and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to develop better innovation policy. It argues that while large amounts are spent on innovation support, there is limited evidence on effectiveness. An experimental approach using RCTs is presented as a smarter, cheaper way to test new policy instruments and scale up effective programs. The document provides an overview of how RCTs work and their benefits over traditional evaluations. It notes few RCTs have been used to study innovation, entrepreneurship and business growth. A new global innovation lab is proposed to increase the use of RCTs by researchers and organizations to generate evidence and insights on effective policy approaches.

The document discusses the results of a survey of employers on the emphasis that colleges place on different learning outcomes. The survey found that employers want colleges to put more emphasis on critical thinking, problem solving, oral and written communication skills, and applying knowledge to real-world settings. Employers also want colleges to put less emphasis on locating and evaluating information from multiple sources, innovation and creativity, teamwork in diverse groups, and connecting choices to ethics.

Excellent customer service and high customer satisfaction must start with understanding customer expectations. Whether your customers are internal (i.e., HR, Finance, Marketing business users) or external, you need to know who your customers are and what their goals are before launching any business initiative. If not, you’ll never win. Pulling from her industry experience in Government, Legal, Education and Healthcare, Strategic Engagement Manager Shannon Duplessis will use the Sparkhound Assessment Model (SAM) approach to show how to assess client needs, agree upon desired expectations and results, and then develop the right KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to measure success.

Thinking Differently. Enabling Innovation - Buffalo Business First EventMike Cardus
Competitive demands require quicker, more effective and innovative problem solving. Problem solvers are required to quickly provide solutions to increasingly complex problems, develop and design new and innovative products and processes – and at the same time, reduce operating time and costs.
Creative thinking is a critical skill required by all people within their roles at work. It is often done by trial and error – the thinker creates an idea and determines if it will work. Not only is trial and error limited by personal knowledge, thinking is also constrained by a “stuckness” in how things are and how they should be.
Join us as Michael Cardus, founder of Create-Learning Team Building & Leadership Inc. teaches you how to break through these barriers and reach your creative potential!
Innovation Workshop Focus:
· Diminished “stuckness” in your thinking
· Increased pace of problem solving
· More effective discussions with others to help them think differently
· Increased use of existing resources and knowledge to innovate solutions

The document discusses the experiences and lessons learned by Harsh Jawharkar as a "serial intrapreneur", launching new ventures within large organizations. Some key points discussed include building the right team with a mix of skills, focusing on solving the right problem by developing a minimum viable product, and being flexible to pivot if needed based on what is learned. It also emphasizes the importance of customizing the innovation process to fit the type of challenge and assets available, as well as designing for metrics from the beginning to understand what is working.

Business Models, Open Collaboration, and Open Source Software DevelopmentCity Unrulyversity
The document discusses business models for open source software development. It begins with an introduction of the speaker and an overview of business models and open collaboration. It then discusses four common business models and how they relate to open source software. A key point is that open source developers provide innovation for businesses through their contributions. The document raises two questions for open source-enabled business models: why developers contribute long-term and why the quality is often high. It proposes that understanding developer motivation and open collaboration is important for businesses utilizing open source.

Get some Organised Feedback
“Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to
handle them, and soon you’ve got a dozen.”
John Steinbeck

write down and share their ideas.
b) Move the process online: make it simple, intuitive, and

10. Your level of psychological inertia
1) Having a fixed vision (model) of the solution or the root cause
2) False assumptions (trusting the data)
3) Specific terminology in a language that is a strong carrier of
psychological inertia
4) Experience, expertise, and reliance upon previous results
5) Limited knowledge, hidden resources or mechanisms
6) Inflexibility (model worship), trying to prove a specific theory,
stubbornness
7) Reusing the same strategy
8) Rushing to a solution, incomplete thinking.
Gordon Cameron identifies eight ”routine causes of psychological inertia”:

11. Break Inertia & Drive Solutions
9 Windows
Explore the problem at each of the three levels:
• Super-system: External environment and components
that the problem or system interacts or may interact
with.
• System: The problem or system that was created.
• Sub-system: A component or parts of the problem or
system.
Explore all nine windows by asking:
• Can we do something at the sub-system, system, or
super-system level in advance to fix or avoid the
problem or improve the system?
• Can we do something at the sub-system, system, or
super-system level in the future to fix or avoid the
problem or improve the system?
• Can we do something at the sub-system, system, or
super-system level in the present to fix or avoid the
problem or improve the system?
