The document discusses problems with the existing Pharo compiler and proposes a new compiler framework called OPAL. The current compiler has issues with reusability, lack of parametrization, and complex mapping between source code and bytecode. OPAL addresses these by using an AST, explicit compiler contexts, and pluggable visitors. It separates the AST from compilation so tools can reuse it. OPAL also allows configuring compiler options and maps source directly to bytecode for debugging. The new framework provides a foundation for features in future Pharo versions and improved compiler extensibility.
This covers details of the processes of compilation. A lot of extra teaching support is required with these.

Alchemist: An Apache Spark <=> MPI Interface with Michael Mahoney and Kai Rot...Databricks
The need for efficient and scalable numerical linear algebra and machine-learning implementations continues to grow with the increasing importance of big data analytics. Since its introduction, Apache Spark has become an integral tool in this field, with attractive features such as ease of use, interoperability with the Hadoop ecosystem, and fault tolerance. However, it has been shown that numerical linear algebra routines implemented using MPI, a tool for parallel programming commonly used in high-performance computing, can outperform the equivalent Spark routines by an order of magnitude or more.
We describe Alchemist, a system for interfacing between Spark and existing MPI libraries that is designed to address this performance gap. The libraries can be called from a Spark application with little effort, and we illustrate how the resulting system leads to efficient and scalable performance on large datasets.
C# 8 and .NET Core 3.0 will be released in 2019. In this session you learn what’s new with these new major versions. Influenced on language enhancements such as async streams and nullable reference types, enhancements based on this are coming to .NET Core and EF Core. With ASP.NET Core, a new routing foundation is available. You’ll see advantages of the new endpoint routing in addition to the Blazor Components, and some new project templates. Last but not least, you learn about different aspects and features creating WPF applications with .NET Core 3.0.

In forums, people often say that 64-bit versions of programs consume a larger amount of memory and stack. Saying so, they usually argue that the sizes of data have become twice larger. But this statement is unfounded since the size of most types (char, short, int, float) in the C/C++ language remains the same on 64-bit systems. Of course, for instance, the size of a pointer has increased but far not all the data in a program consist of pointers. The reasons why the memory amount consumed by programs has increased are more complex. I decided to investigate this issue in detail.
