SMRT™ Cell DNA Sequencing Consumable
2011
SMRT DNA sequencing is performed on SMRT™ Cells, each patterned with 150,000 zero mode
waveguides or ZMWs. Each ZMW contains a single DNA polymerase, providing the window to observe
DNA sequencing in real-time. The PacBio™ RS system continuously monitors ZMWs in sets of 75,000 at
a time. SMRT Cells are nanofabricated consumable substrates used in conjunction with a DNA
sequencing kit for automated processing on the PacBio RS system. One SMRT Cell is consumed per
sequencing reaction. SMRT Cells are packaged together in a streamlined 8Pac format. Experiments can
be run on a single SMRT Cell or in batch mode to meet project needs.

Rockwell PathMaster GPS System
1992
Under contract to Praxis Product Design and
working with the engineers from Zexel USA,
initial prototypes were developed for the
Rockwell PathMaster system. This system
uses a GPS receiver, the car’s odometer, flux-
gate magnetic compass, the Navigation
Technologies map database, and navigation
software to continuously monitor the car’s
position. The database and software comes
on a 120 Mbyte PCMCIA card. The user can
select destinations from the menu of interest
points, by street intersection, or an address.
The PathMaster then calculates a route to the
destination based on driving preferences.
Currently, the device comes in select rental
cars from Hertz and Avis.

helping them merge their unique value-added capabilities to
produce breakthrough products.
9. Trimble
Optical Surveying Instruments
1996
Trimble's TTS™ Optical Survey Family,
including the TTS-500 and TTS-300, are
optical extensions to the GPS Total Station
family. With reflectorless EDM, the TTS-500
and TTS-300 are designed to work in areas
where GPS might not be the optimal solution.
Trimble's TTS series is ideal for areas where
GPS signals are obstructed, such as tunnels,
parking garages, dense forests as well as
building facades or dam faces that are
difficult or dangerous to reach. The TTS-500,
a 5-second instrument, and the TTS-300, a
3-second instrument, include unique, high-
performance features that improve
productivity and make the system easier to
use. Their unique mechanical design and
reflectorless technology speed up
measurements that would require
significantly more time with existing
instruments. As a prism is not required to get
millimeter accurate readings, a single
surveyor can effectively use the TTS-500 or
TTS-300 for a range of survey applications.

11. SS/L
Flight Telerobotic Servicer
End Effector
1991
This end effector was designed
and used on the SS/L internal
Robotics Research manipulator to
demonstrate and investigate
space-servicing tasks. The
functionally equivalent DTF-1 end
effector can grip objects up to 4" in
diameter with a force of 0-50 lbs.
The mechanism incorporates a
brushless dc motor driving a
pancake harmonic drive gear set.
The output of the harmonic drive
operates a rack and pinion
attached to parallel jaw structures
mounted on cross-roller linear
bearings. When manipulating an
object two fail-safe brakes provide
two-fault tolerance against
inadvertent release of a work
piece or tool. Gripping force is
determined through a torque
transducer grounding the
harmonic drive, and positioning
sensing is accomplished through a
redundant optical encoder.
12. Varian
TWT Amplifier
Automated Fixture Station
1989
Under The Varian/USAF Tech-
nology Modernization Program
this prototype glue fixture
replaced a hand operation with
a calibrated adhesive dispenser
utilizing stepper motors to
control linear motion and PC I/O
to control fluid volume and
timing sequences. The assem-
bly fixture and automated station
reduced the fabrication time to
20% of the hand operation, and
increased yield by 70%.
Gridded Electron Gun Assembly Station
1987
A joint Technology Modernization Program
between Varian and the USAF provided an
opportunity to improve yields and reduce the
costs associated with the assembly of gridded
electronic guns. Historically this was a hand
operation, which required elaborate and costly
fixturing. If the sub-assembly’s alignment was
compromised, during the braising operation,
the units were scrapped. Using an optical
comparator and a YAG laser, the sub-
assembles were accurately aligned and welded
using the laser delivered through the alignment
lens. Alignment could thus be verified before
welding increasing yields to nearly 100%.
