Yohann Tschudi, Technology and Market Analyst at Yole Développement, presents the "AI Is Moving to the Edge—What’s the Impact on the Semiconductor Industry?" tutorial at the May 2019 Embedded Vision Summit.
Artificial intelligence is proliferating into numerous edge applications and disrupting numerous industries. Clearly this represents a huge opportunity for technology suppliers. But it can be difficult to discern exactly what form this opportunity will take. For example, will edge devices perform AI computation locally, or in the cloud? Will edge devices use separate chips for AI, or will AI processing engines be incorporated into the main processor SoCs already used in these devices?
In this talk, Tschudi answers these questions by presenting and explaining his firm's market data and forecasts for AI processors in mobile phones, drones, smart home devices and personal robots. He explains why there is a strong trend towards executing AI computation at the edge, and quantifies the opportunity for separate processor chips and on-chip accelerators that address visual and audio AI tasks.
Consumers are becoming increasingly dependent on mobile technology. Consumers not only own more mobile devices, but they also use them more often for an increasing number of tasks.
Marketers are searching for ways to grasp opportunities stemming from the extraordinary mobile penetration and usage patterns. Mobile devices provide easier ways for marketers to provide added-values to the consumer and shopper, making their lives easier.
The following presentation discusses several trends and enablers, mainly:Emerging Devices & Technologies, Consumer added values from mobile,Mobile Marketing Best Practices such as apps, gaming, content, commerce etc.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term used to describe a network of interconnected devices that are able to communicate with each other and share data. These devices can be anything from smart appliances in your home to sensors in a manufacturing plant or even wearable devices like fitness trackers. The applications of IoT are numerous and continue to expand as technology advances. In this article, we'll explore some of the most important and interesting applications of IoT.
Smart Homes and Buildings
One of the most well-known applications of IoT is in smart homes and buildings. IoT devices can be used to control everything from temperature and lighting to security systems and home entertainment systems. Smart home devices can be controlled remotely through smartphones or other devices, and can even be automated based on the user's preferences and routines.
Smart buildings take this concept a step further, with IoT sensors and systems used to optimize energy usage, monitor air quality, and even control elevators and other building systems. These applications can help reduce energy costs, improve safety, and enhance the overall user experience.
Healthcare
IoT has a variety of applications in the healthcare industry, from wearable devices that monitor vital signs to smart pills that track medication usage. IoT sensors can also be used to monitor patients in hospital settings, allowing medical staff to detect changes in a patient's condition more quickly and respond accordingly.
In addition, IoT devices can be used for remote patient monitoring, allowing patients to receive care in their own homes rather than having to travel to a medical facility. This can improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
Agriculture
IoT sensors and systems are increasingly being used in the agricultural industry to optimize crop yields and reduce waste. These sensors can be used to monitor soil moisture, temperature, and nutrient levels, allowing farmers to make more informed decisions about when and how to water and fertilize their crops.
In addition, IoT systems can be used to track the movement and health of livestock, helping farmers to detect and respond to potential health issues more quickly.
Manufacturing
IoT is also being used in the manufacturing industry to improve efficiency and reduce waste. IoT sensors can be used to monitor equipment and machinery, providing real-time data on performance and identifying potential maintenance issues before they become more serious

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

synchronize with smartphones and other smart devices; to send notifications about calls/sms, emails, social
networks; GSM, 2G and 3G technologies for making calls, transfer the messages, and also to be an
accelerometer, thermometer, compass, chronograph and other technologies.
Market of wearable mobile devices can be classified in 7 segments:
Smart - watches – watches with an expanded features (not limited to the display of the
current time of day)
Smart – glasses – high technological glasses combining functions of smarphone and PC
Wearable cameras – mini cameras built-in clothes, often equipped with GPS modules.
Wearable cameras are comparable with devices using OS with the ability to manage the
device’s features via mobile app.
Smart clothes – textile accessories, clothing or outfit equipped with additional consumer
functions by means of specific materials and embedded computing devices
Fitness devices, smart devices for sport – ‘smart’ devices with detectors of heart rate,
energy consumption, sleep detectors and other sports functions, stimulating user’s activity
Medical smart devices – medical devices compatible with smart phones, tablets and
other consumer devices elaborated for various medical purposes, including health
improvement and ensuring control over the treatment process
Wearable 3D measuring device –computing mechanisms built-in cloths units, equipped
with ambulatory 3D measurement
Development of smart devices market began in 1980s, however wide popularity of these devices started
later. GoPro camera enjoyed widespread popularity, starting from its announcement in 2004 sales were
doubling every year. Along with the launch of iPod Nano in 2010 and Sony SmartWatch in 2012, smart
devices market started to shift gradually from smart cameras to ‘smart’ watches.
It is worth mentioning that smart devices are either not presented by manufactures in the
Russian market at all or their sales start with a several months time lag.
2. Smart-watches
One of the fastest growing segments of the market of wearable smart
devices is the segment of smart-watches. A large number of manufactures
of this type of smart devices entered the market over the past year.
Moreover, such big players as Apple, Microsoft, Samsung and LG are
developing smart-watches. A range of smart-watches compatible with
smartphones and other ‘smart’ devices; independent smart-watches,
equipped with the operating systems; smart-watches with voice functions
and sport smart-watches are presented in the market. Around 15 models of ‘smart’-watches are presented
currently in the Russian market.
Smart watches compatible with smartphones are designed for users who actually use
smartphones. Thanks to alerts about incoming calls / sms / social networks and e-mail
notification users always stay connected. It leads to the integration of high technology into
everyday life.
According to ABI Research forecasts the market size of smart watches will increase in the nearest year: in
2013 sales of smart watches will reach 1.2 million pieces and $ 370 million in cash. By 2015 sales will
increase by more than 20 times.

Main drivers of growth of smart-watches market include:
• Increasing penetration of smartphones in many world markets.
According to many analysts smartphone market is close to saturation. It will boost sales growth of smart
watches as an alternative multifunction device.
• Wide price affordability allows less solvent customers to buy multifunctional device. For example,
sport bracelets at an average price of $ 50 are in high demand
• Applications ecosystem
• GPS-modules, that provide access to the geolocation services
• Access to social networks (at the level of notifications, or higher for some devices)

3. • Access to work and personal e-mail (at the level of notifications, or higher for some devices)
• Sport features that allow to keep track of daily activity of the user, which also helps to monitor state
of health of the smart watch owner
• Healthy lifestyle trend in the modern world
Main constraints of growth of smart-watches market include:
• The way the battery charge that takes a lot of time;
Users of mechanical, quartz or electronic watches did not get used to the need of daily, weekly or even
monthly recharge of devices. Smart watches are to be recharged for a certain period of time, either
through USB-cable connected to PC or via wireless charging device, which goes along with the device
• The main function of watches becomes unavailable due to possible daily or weekly battery
discharge;
Watch is a device for determining current time of day and the duration of time intervals in hours, minutes
and seconds. Smart watches are usually equipped with technology (GPS, Bluetooth, LCD, etc) that affect
the battery life. As a result wrist smart device can often run down, limiting user access to the main function
of the watch.
• Smart watches compete with smartphones as its functional substitutes;
• Rejection of innovative products due to lack of awareness;
• Low penetration of smartphones for smart watches, which work in conjunction with smartphones;
• In contrast with sales of smartphones, and especially tablets, mobile operators do not receive
additional revenues from provision of mobile data transfer services to the owners of mobile smart
devices, as well as revenue from value added services (VAS). It does not encourage operators to
promote these products by its subsidizing in the West.
Smart-glasses
Smart glasses is a full stand-alone mobile computer. This type of device
can either replace a smartphone or complement it. The main distinction
of ‘smart’ glasses is its ability to fulfill simultaneously three separate
functions: augmented reality, mobile phone plus Internet, video diary.
Augmented reality implemented in the form of introduction of virtual
reality elements, has not yet been fully implemented in devices
announced by Google, Vuzix and Olympus. At the same time, the first
version of glasses fully implement video diary, as well as provide an opportunity to make calls and access
the Internet.
According to IHS iSuppli estimates, global sales of ‘smart’ glasses may reach 6.6 mln units by the end of
2016.

Main drivers of growth of smart-glasses market include:
• Unique ecosystem of mobile apps for smart glasses
• Thanks to use of mobile applications for smart glasses user generates additional traffic that affects
the operator's revenue
• Penetration of 4G LTE and a wide coverage of developed countries by 3G network, which allows in
case of having access to the Internet to transfer data at high speed
• Possibility of keeping a video diary
• Equipment with photocamera
• Augmented reality which attracted many users
• GPS-modules, that provide access to the geolocation services
• Access to social networks (at the level of notifications, or higher for some devices)
• Access to work and personal e-mail (at the level of notifications, or higher for some devices)
Main constraints of growth of smart-glasses market include:
• Violation of privacy;
• Incorrect understanding of the purpose of smart glasses by the audience;
Manufacturers of smart glasses are afraid that audience will get the wrong idea about the purpose of
device and will use it more as a mobile camera, rather than augmented reality device, as well as use video
recording for unique events, such as skydiving, etc., rather than daily life recording. Thus, smart glasses
will be presented in the competitive market of sports cameras, smartphones, tablets and other devices
equipped with camera.
• Short battery life;
• Eyes strain;
• The need to wear glasses all the time;
• Unusual of control
• Fragility of smart glasses;
