- During 2011, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society helped one out of every five Sailors and Marines serving our Nation. To continue to help Sailors and Marines it will take “all hands”
- We are underway or deployed 365 days a year, in harms way. We must be prepared to meet any contingency or operation. But most importantly, we have to bring all of our Sailors and Marines home and provide for them and their families
- When they know that they can count on the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society when they need help for themselves and their loved ones, our Sailors and Marines can focus their attention on the job at hand -- protecting America.
- The Navy - Marine Corps Relief Society provides that kind of security to Sailors, Marines, and their families. And they have been since 1904. During their first Century of Service, the Society disbursed more than $1.1 Billion in interest-free loans and grants to more than 4 million Sailors, Marines and their families.
- Partnership is very important to our mission. The Navy and Marine Corps provide the Society with logistical and other resource support to accomplish their work. In return, their assistance has a direct impact on mission readiness by allowing SMs to focus on their jobs rather than be sidetracked by family and/or financial concerns. The Society only provides assistance to the population affiliated with the Navy and Marine Corps. Society assistance is always based on need. Financial assistance for emergency needs can be given in the form of an interest-free loan, loan/grant combination, or grant. Educational assistance for eligible persons, including spouses and children of active duty service members is also available on a need basis. Funds for the Society’s educational support comes from their Reserve Fund -- not from donations! The money for all other financial assistance and programs comes from donations, so the Society’s stewardship of this money is very important to our business .
- Although sponsored by the Department of the Navy, the Society is a private, non-profit volunteer service organization whose programs are totally funded by charitable contributions.
- In 2011 1,800 families were helped as they dealt with hurricanes, wildfires, tornados, and the Operation Tomodachi evacuation. Emergency assistance is not only provided during a national crisis, but also during a personal crisis. The Society can provide assistance when: * Food, rent and utilities * Emergency transportation * Essential vehicle repairs * Unforeseen family emergencies * Excess Medical/dental bills * Disaster relief assistance * Funeral expenses
- This slide helps to illustrate how NMCRS has evolved since it was established. The Society was founded in 1904 by 19 Volunteers. Seed money for the organization was provided by $9000 in gate receipts from the 1903 Army-Navy football game. Earmarked for aid to widows and orphans of service members. The Society has grown into a global organization with donations exceeding $ 19 million last year. Every dollar that is donated goes directly back to provide support to our Sailors and Marines. Fewer than 220 paid employees draw their salaries from the Reserve Fund, NOT from contributions. Most of the Society’s work is accomplished by approximately 3,500 dedicated and trained VOLUNTEERS.
- The Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan resulted in significant casualties that required special Society assistance.
- QAL program was developed at the request of Navy and Marine Corps Senior Leadership who were concerned about Sailors and Marines facing short term emergencies and ending up with outrageously high interest rates. Now when a Sailor or Marine hit a bump in the road there is a quick interest free solution.
- This chart illustrates 2010 statistics for each of these programs.
- Last year this area received in excess of three times the amount of assistance than our local Sailors and Marines gave in contributions. The Society is here to help with all the needs of Sailors, Marines and their family members, but they need all of our help to continue.
